How did you paint the roof white and the tailgate letter white? Did you paint the roof first? Were runs down onto the side where it would be red a problem? Did the thin paint want to seep through the masking tape at the edge? I want to paint my truck blue with a white roof like yours but I'm not sure what order to do it in or how to mask it. Thanks.
Hi Christiansok,

Thanks for the kind words.

I painted the roof and wheels with white Rustoleum unthinned directly from the can and used a foam brush. There are brush marks if you look close but it's a work truck so I don't care. I used a decal/sticker kit from LMC for the tailgate. I did have a few small runs...very thin coats is the key to no runs...no real seepage through the tape...again, I tried NOT to load up the roller with a lot of paint...after you do one coat, you learn the technique...difficult to describe...just need to do it...you can always practice on a old hood or fender first....Good luck...

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

I'm just beginning to paint my 67' in the same way. I spraybombed the top with red rustoleum and planned to roll the rest of the truck with satin black. I did one coat with the roller and decided to buy the compresser and a 20 dollar spray gun from harbor freight to spray the rest... realized how much sanding it was gonna take to make the black smooth. Truck is far from perfect but I just got sick of seeing it in milky black primer. Sorry for the hijack, but I've been thinking about this for along time and was stoked to see a thread about this! BTW your truck looks great!

Your truck will look good soon. I didn't really spend much time sanding mine since it is a work truck and I didn't want to cry if it got chipped or a bird crapped on it.....Thanks for the compliment....

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

Nice job there and good to see cheap ways of fixing and doing stuff for those of us on very limited budgets. I hate to put much in a 500 buck truck.

How would the paint do if you used one of the cheap electric airless sprayers to apply the rustoleum paint? Would you think it still needs thinned? I was considering just doing it in primier but if i could get a dark red color like my interior is i would rather do that. I guess for less than 20 bucks it would be a cheap weekend intertainment.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

Everything I have read is when you spray rustoleum you dont dilute nearly as much, like 8 parts paint 2 parts mineral spirits. The debate seems to be about half in favor mineral spirits, half using acetone...I have mineral spirits so thats what Ill use.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

Does the paint have to be Rustoleum?I guess the Tractor Supply paint would be about the same? I ask because I wonder how single stage urethane would do...about $70 a gallon. How about Hot Rod Flatz?I guess it's all the same.Just thin accordingly.

Rustoleum is an Alkyd Enamel.

A single stage Urethane would be more durable and more scratch resistant than Rustoleum. Hot Rod Flatz is also a urethane. Both of these are much better than Rustoleum as they are true automotive finishes.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

I painted a farm truck frame with Rustoleum a few years back, but instead of rolling in on I thinned it with mineral spirits and shot it through a cheap paint gun... it actually laid out very nice and looked pretty good... but (yes there had to be some buts here) it took two weeks to fully dry and the shop floor was sticky for months.

Nice job! Here is a link to a page that introduced me to this painting method. I guess a lot of folks are doing it now.. why not? I want to give it a try next summer.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

We have a local guy that sprayed an all METAL '34 ford with Rustoleum Industrial thinned 50-50 with acetone.

It looks spot on as far as satin goes. Not too flat. Not too shiney. Perfect.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job

I'm in the middle of shooting mine right now, switched from flat black to satin. The flat is very flat, too chalkboard looking on my test panel. Oh well another 8 bucks in paint won't kill me. By the way, the 79 dollar compressor and 20 dollar gun are working perfectly, the first coat went on like butter, very smooth. Added a small amt of hardener as well, paint is dry to the touch 15 minutes after I finished. 4 to 1 ratio paint to mineral spirits seems to be the right ratio. its dry and 74 degrees here in Jax, FL today..

I think the key to it drying would be adding a compatible hardner as done above. I'm not sure what kind of hardner to add though. Maybe sleepingbag can elaborate ????

Spend hours in NAPA stores waiting to talk to mgrs and owners so I picked up a small bottle of their medium hardener. Ill get the bottle here in a little bit and take a pic.
