Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread

I hope we can lean on each other for support. I'm a step ahead of you right now, just ready to assemble the front end.

I found it easier to remove everything off the front end for degreasing and painting, rather than lay on my back.

I bought the CPP grand slam kit, so I should have some tips for you.

Love your truck. He must have imported it from the south?

Hey Brian, yes, this truck was in Arizona up until 1985. From 85 until this spring the owner put less than 4000 miles on it, I put half that again on it this spring/summer.
Will have to look and see what the "grand slam" kit is. My CPP kit (won't be here for a couple weeks), is pretty basic, 2-1/2" drop spindles, and I ordered the 2" drop springs and matching shocks to go with.
Do you have a build thread?

No build thread yet. Will have to start one. Grand Slam kit is spindles, springs, shocks, rotors, booster, etc. whole shebang in a box.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread

moving right along, good choice on the engine, a good perfomer rpm air gap intake would look great on it, are you going to do a cam swap or anything to it or install it as is?

CRGR, I just checked out this thread. Nice story.

What is the history behind your truck? It looks alot like the '66 a friend of mine brought up to Central Ontario, from Georgia, in the late 80's.
Greg.

This truck was an Arizona truck until 1986. The Wisconsin Title dated 6/26/86 showed the odometer reading at 68,925 miles, odometer read 73,142 when I bought it from that guy. I had the Wisconsin title in my possession during the import process, but had to surrender it to title it here. The title had 25 year old coffee stain on it too, I scanned it so I could keep it. When I bought the truck, I drove to Port Huron with a buddy, met the transport driver, went through customs, and drove it home. A little bit better than a two hour drive, smiling like a jacka$$ eating thistles the whole way... waiting for something to break... wanted to go right past me exit and keep on driving! I put another 3000 miles on it over the summer.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread

I had a bit of garage time today, dismantled the rad support/grill support. Everything looks solid here to, a bit more evidence of a minor collision at the front right corner, but nothing alarming. Funny thing though, there are no front bumper support brackets. I also removed and dismantled the engine compartment portion of the heater, again, everything looks to be in excellent condition. I am going to look into having the heater core pressure tested, but it looks almost like new.

Maybe we can get together next season and compare trucks. Cambridge isn't that far from Newmarket.

Thanks! The engine will actually be painted chevy orange. Thanks for the tip on the insulation, looks/sounds like a great product, and the price is right too.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread

Well, I got a lot accomplished on my extra long weekend. It helps to have a friend in the shop who listens, kinda wish Humphrey would pitch in here or there though

In between playing hockey myself, coaching my kids team, and going to watch my step son's Junior "C" hockey game, I got the engine/transmission out, and the front suspension and steering ripped off. It doesn't sound like much, but this IS my first rodeo, so I am learning as I go. I hadn't planned on removing the cross member, but it seemed a good idea to get it off and get it sand blasted. Would have been a nasty, time consuming job to prep that for paint in place. It was remarkably easy actually.

Re: CRGRS 66 – Winter Build Thread

missed the main shot...

Also, question for you guys... is the cross brace that is pictured supposed to be shaped like that?

The picture of the frame with the back of the blade against it doesn't really show it very well, but in front of where the steering box mounts there is quite an indentation in the frame. This is not normal either I presume (more evidence of the collision that I suspect took place at the front drivers corner)
