If it is just "temporary" you could use dark gray primer, which is basically black. Or, maybe use single stage black with a flatener added to it. BTW, I totally understand buying parts one at a time....Good luck!

Thanks! Do you think I should put a clear coat on the primer? It's going to be outside and I want it to be protected as much as possible without spending a lot of money.

You can actually get flat or semi-gloss clear coat but I wouldn't recommend shooting it over the primer. It really depends on how long you are planning to wait before paint it with another color. I wouldn't spend the extra bucks for clear coat if you are going to be painting it within a year or so. As long as you have a couple of good coats it should hold up fine. If you clear coat over the primer you are adding a bunch of stripping time to your body work. my 2 cents.

Yeah I agree with what your saying. I have the bed primered black right now, and it looks really good. The only thing I don't like is that if it gets wet it leaves water streaks and scratches very easy. Other than that, no complaints

Well, not much of an update but I got the inner fenders repainted and the driver side fender primered. The grille is ready for primer I just ran out of daylight to paint it, and the passenger fender is almost ready. Hopefully, the front clip will be back on before the end of the week. Anyway, I'll post some pics tomorrow didn't have time to take any when it was light.

Well, not really any updates to report but I do have a question. I pulled off a valve cover today to repaint it, and there is a white foam/milk like substance inside the valve cover and in the head. Do you guys think this is water in the oil? The engine has steamed a little bit (nothing bad) and we thought maybe it had a bad head gasket, which would explain this. Thanks

great start man, nice to see some young bucks working on there trucks, i live up in redding we have an awesome car show and Cruz in april u should come on up and check it out, its called kool april nights check it out on im not sure on the date but i think they have a website look it up on google.

It could be water in the oil, but more likely it's due to short trips in cold weather. The engine gets hot, and then when it cools - condensation forms. If you don't get the engine warm for a good period of time on the next trip, it doesn't "boil off" the water from the previous trip. So water accumulates inside the engine and forms that very light coffee-looking goo - usually on the oil filler cap and the PCV, sometimes on the dip stick if enough water got past the rings and into the pan.

See my post above as to what it might be. There's not too much you can do besides this:

- change your oil more often;
- wipe the "coffee" off of your filler cap/PCV and then;
- go for a long drive so that your engine "cooks off" the water.

Sorry guy's haven't had much time lately to share my progress-finally some nice weather so I could actually work on truck. I'm doing some body work right now and replacing all of the gaskets on the motor. I should be primering the truck this week end if all goes well and it should be up and running again. I was sanding down the driver side of the bed and I think it had more bondo then anything lol. I'll post some more pic's tomorrow because i need to sort through them.

Here are some pic's of my cab. The cab is pretty much a pile of junk after looking at it closer.






If you can't see it in the pics, not only is the floor/rocker rusted out really bad, the p/o cut off the roof to fix a dent and didn't finish welding it up. He put a few tack welds to hold it on but thats it. I had a body guy and he gave me a ball park estimate of 1200, so I'm thinking about just doing a cab swap but I want to keep the small back window. More pics in a sec

doesn't even look like the same truck. what grit are did you use on the bed sides to make them that smooth.?
whats going on with the cab roof?
i remember the first time a i pulled my carpet up and saw the rustttt i couldn't believe it i thought my truck was a bucket of rust.. well it was haha.

Yeah well when i started to primer it it looked like sh*t so i sanded it down to bare metal. I used 60 and 80 grit and a palm sander. The guy i bought the truck from did that i don't know what he was thinking, so now i get the luxury of trying to fix it. Yeah my cap is so rusty i think i might just have to replace it.

looks good i still don't get whats going on with the roof did the seem break?

also where did you pic those valve covers up junk yard.
do you know what year Chevy motor there off of make and model of the car/truck

The guy I bought it from cut the roof off to pull a dent (was a construction truck for the first part of its life) and never finished the job. Then he tried to use a stick welder to weld it back on The valve covers were on the truck when I got it, but the 327 I found out is actually not original so I'm not sure exactly what year the motor is.

I bought a barden bumper yesterday and got it cleaned up/painted today. I didn't get any pics after paint but here are some before shots.



I was going to primer the truck today but it was too windy to paint, hopefully I can do it tomorrow.
