Thanks Jim, picked them up at Trick Trucks and Rods. He had the entire truck and it would have been a great patina look build candidate. Was tempted to get the whole thing....and was able to resist.
Grandsons coming over and it should be a good day in the shop.

Something about finding parts, the hunt and or spontaneous find is beyond fun. Another reason why I just love patina, each part is just so unique, its like finding a whole new breed every time. Those look great, how much you have to fetch for em?

I agree 99 to Life - this hunt went pretty fast as I stopped by Trick Trucks and Rods in Ohio to pick up a few parts a couple weeks ago, mentioned my desire for a fender to owner Tom and he had these coming in. He described them and I agreed to buy them sight unseen. CFO (wife) mailed a check out right away and I picked them up this week. I paid way too much and I am way OK with that... I saved the time of the search and Tom makes some profit so he can stay in business. Plus, I like Tom...a win for both of us.

We are going to run the green fenders on the purple / blue Burb...all with the currently popular patina look.

Thank you Hart Rod. That 35 has been my long term project and I vowed to finish it before starting on the Suburban.....then I thought, this is just havin' fun and not a business, so we jumped into the 'Burb to get it on the new chassis with powertrain in. Then we will go back to finish the '35. Keeping a project journal here.

A good friend pulled the engine and transmission from the wrecked donor truck and brought them over to the shop today. Traded the truck to him for the labor. The 5.3 needs a good detailing and painting then should be good to go.

nice powerplant. Man I didn't know you go those parts from ohio, can I get a contact # or he got a website. I'm not too far from ohio, I'v gone over to budd's which is the only place I know of that does antique salvage around these parts. budd's use to really only deal with AD stuff but he has quite a bit of stuff, though usually rough its hit or miss. I'd like to find some rear fenders and maybe a driver door for my current truck. Need a specific patina really. I have plenty of spare parts but would like to match the patina. though I'm usually not one to spend as much on some parts as I could buy a whole truck for!!

He does have the rest of the truck with the patina same as these fenders. He has connections out West I think and has some parts shipped in. When I built the black truck I bought a rust free front fender from California for $185 ( in 2007) and spent about $75 for shipping. Also found a pair of rust free rear fenders for $250 which was an outstanding buy...and it took me months of trying to do it. I bought these fronts for $300 each. Not too much more than the last one I bought plus shipping. And I didn't have to look months for them.

nice link for sure. Ironically not even 5 years ago when I got into doing this stuff, I found a pic of that thieves AD truck online. It was one of my favorite trucks that made me really just fall in love with patina, AD trucks and just that look in general.

Yeah sometimes you gotta pay to play, I'v bought alot of my projects and or parts for 3-500 bucks, some more for sure. its crazy to think your two solid fenders cost more than what I bought my last truck for! but..... I also have 25 hrs in a rear fender for my 52' I'm painting, and thats just metal work and epoxy primer. So when it comes down to it time is money and then it doesn't seem bad coughing up some loot.

by the looks of what I see complete trucks bringing lately, I think parts and parts trucks or projects might be on the rise too, so its a catch 22. maybe more will get saved from scrappers and put on the road, but then makes it harder for average joes to get into it. I guess time will tell. You've been in it for a while so maybe you've seen some trends come and go. but... style never fades in my book.

The pesky fuel leak in the '56 Chevy turned out to be the screws holding the sending unit in. Some rubber gasket on the back of the screw heads seems to have fixed it. That took way longer than planned to fix so haven't had any time on the 'Burb for more than a week.

There was a thread on here (can't find it now) where someone was asking the difference between an AD Suburban and 1/2 ton truck frame. The only difference I've noticed (aside from the fuel tank straps) between the Suburban frame and the truck frame I have for this project is the second and third from front body mounts. Of course the truck doesn't have the third body mount. The fourth and fifth body mounts are simply a hole on top of the frame on the Suburban and the truck has the same holes.

Made it back from Hot Rod Power Tour (took in last three stops) and we had a great time. Saw Ogre's truck (and I assume Ogre driving) go by twice in Bettendorf and was never able to hook up. Great looking and sounding truck!

One of the roller replacement tires would not seal on the bead after repeated removal and replacement attempts....so made due with the furniture moving dolly that we bought 25 years ago for $5 each. They have been really handy over the years.

Moved the replacement frame onto the lift and removed the truck #2 body mount and installed the Suburban #2 body mount and middle running board bracket.

All the holes for installation (including the top one) were there. Because the body mount forward edge sits on top of the running board bracket rear edge, the frame is designed with an outward dimple to match the mounting surfaces. Looks like the frame will have plenty of spare holes.

Will blast these and make them look nice once we know everything fits.

Jim - HRPT was the most fun we've ever had at a car related activity. Hope you can make one.

Lots of yard work and shop organization / cleaning didn't leave much Burb build time. Made a little progress on the toe board....figured fixing one large hole would be easier that fixing a bunch of little ones. Been there done that before.

Thanks Dug! We have the same basic powertrain in the '56 BelAir and are very impressed. Was enjoying your build this morning. Awesome!

Before installing toe and floor pans, really needed to fill in the original steering column hole. When I was younger, I would mark the patch, jump up and run over to the grinder, remove a little, test fit and repeat a dozen times. Now, I have the belt sander right there to use. That little hospital table is one of the handier items in the shop.

An "OK" quality filler patch. Little hammer and dolly work to stretch out the shrinking from welding heat and primer surface will be good enough. Still need to install the triangular piece beside this one.
