Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
What must one do to get the RH door keyed when there is no lock cylinder present? Does one need to buy another door handle? Thanks

The lock cylinders are universal and will fit in either handle. If you can find a lock cylinder I can key it the same as your other locks, then you can install it in your existing handle. LockDoc

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
Hello Leon
Wanted to thank you for the information on this thread. Due to the covid crisis Ive had a chance to finally work on my projects. Here is my question. I have a few ignition switches but no keys, my understanding is that you need the key to remove the tumbler. Am I out of luck with those switches? Is there a way to remove those tumblers without a key? Next question is, what is your current price to key alike ignition, 2doors and glove box lock? I dont have a key. Tony |

Hi Tony, I have a set of tryout keys (some people call them master keys) that I use to remove the lock cylinders from switches that have no keys. There really is no way for the average person to remove the lock cylinders without the correct key if you are trying to save them. If a person has a lot of old GM keys laying around they can sometimes get lucky and find one that will work. The cost to re-key lock cylinders is $12.50 each except for the tailgate handles and they are $15.50. Plus how ever many keys a person wants & return postage. The cost is determined by the number of cylinders that have to be re-keyed. For example, if the door cylinders are keyed the same then I would cut a key for them from the code number ($7.50 ea for replacement keys cut by code) and re-key the ignition and glove box to match them. @2 x $12.50 Thanks, LockDoc

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
After owning my Short wide side for 16 years, I finally have keys! Thanks Leon, this project has been stalled for quite a long time. It's amazing how things start happening once you've got a set of keys!!

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
Here is my reply to him:
Hi Ken, All you would need to send me is the ignition cylinder and key and I will change the ignition to match the door cylinders. The cost would be $15.50 + return postage (about 4 bucks) which would include 2 new keys cut to the 9449 code.... If you have trouble getting the ignition cylinder out of the switch let me know. If you wrap the ignition cylinder in some newspaper or paper towel and tape it up you can mail it in a 6x9 padded envelope by USPS First Class Mail for about 4 bucks. LockDoc Thanks. LockDoc

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
What does it take to convert a 65 ignition switch to one with an accessory position? Do you have access to the necessary parts and can you make it work if provided a key code? This is something I've always wanted to do
Thanks, Tom

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
Hey Doc,
This is an absolutely fantastic service that just isn't available many places these days! I have a 66 Suburban with a clam shell, 2 door locks and glove box lock. The ignition switch cylinder was replaced by the previous owner so it's new, works well and I have 2 keys for it. However, I don't have keys for the doors, rear hatch or glove box. Will the rear tailgate lock have a code on it like the doors? I just found this thread tonight and haven't checked to see if the doors both match or not yet. Is it possible to rekey everything to match the ignition? Or maybe if the others are all the same, it makes more sense to rekey the ignition? Just thinking as I type... All suggestions and input are welcome. Thanks! |

Yes it should have a code on it. I can key any of them to match any key or lock. Yes, you want to change the minimum number of locks to keep the cost down. If all of the other locks are the same then I could just change the ignition cylinder to match them. LockDoc

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
Thanks Sir, this is great information. I'll pull the locks out over the next few days as I have a chance to see what I have and then go from there.
Thanks again! Scott |

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
Just got the ignition switch you sent. Looks like what I need, now time to get to work. Whole point of this is to try and get an ACC position so I can listen to the radio. When I get it all figured out I'll try to post results, as I know a lot of others want to do the same thing.
Thanks for the help Doc. Tom

Re: Making Keys For The 60 -66 Chevy Trucks
I worked at a chevy dealer back in the early 70s, we had a large number of keys on a wire ring. If we lost any of the older keys , we would try them until one worked. I never remember not finding one that one of those keys wouldnt fit. We to had a curtis key cutter
Man I would love to have that key ring now David in Virginia |
