Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Had a 4 day weekend, so I got the frame, all my brackets and crossmembers final painted and bolted together.
Even got a coat on my front end, and transfercase. Working on getting my leafsprings cleaned up and painted, and I've got to put my front end back together and start on the rear. Does anybody know where to get the little teflon sliders for the leafsprings? |

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Haven't updated in a while. I started cleaning up my 52" front springs, and found a crack on one of my main leafs.
I tried to mix them with another set I have, but they didn't jive so I just ordered some new ones from SD truck springs. $270 to my door for the pair. I'll get some pics tomorrow. I picked up another rig to replace my suburban while my trucks down. Its an 84 with a 6.2. The PO was getting some bubbles in the coolant, so he figured the head gaskets were going, and parked it 8 years ago. The bottom end and the injector pump only have about 20K on it. I pulled the heads, and found cracks between the valves on 3 cylinders, and didn't see any obvious problems with the head gaskets. Fortunately I have a spare 6.2 with good heads so I swapped them over. I've got the heads on with new 6.5 head gaskets, and am swapping the C code manifold for a J code. I port matched the heads and manifolds while i had it apart, and I'm also gonna modify the Air filter housing to run a 4" hose to the core support. Its already got duel 2.5" flowmasters, 4 inch lift, good 33" tires, and the pump's turned up some, so I'm curious to see how it does. Not bad for $500. I'm trying to just get it back together, so I can get back on my truck, but I can't seem to leave well enough alone. |

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Whats the purpose of using 6.5 head gaskets as appose to 6.2 head gaskets. What is the purpose and or advantage?

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Awesome fab work on your truck. Any updates to report? Also could you tell me what grade, size, and length of bolts you used to bolt 4x4 parts to the 2wd frame. I'am doing the same thing to my 72 swb 2wd truck. I got 2 70 3/4ton 4wd's trucks for parts. How did you figure where to mount rear leafs to frame. My truck has trailing arm suspension. Is there a reference point to start with? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Maniac, With the bed still on, I measured from the center line of the rear axle to the rear cab mounts. Make sure your front and rear cab mounts are equal and square. I'm not sure what the stock dimension is, I think I moved it back an inch or so to center it in the wheel well. Start on post 28. I used grade 8 zinc coated hardware. 9/16" for the spring mounts and shackles, and mostly 3/8" bolts for brackets. If you're gonna wheel or work your truck hard you could use 7/16" bolts.
I finally got my truck back in the garage. I've got to get back in build mode. I'm not sure what to do first. Any body got any suggestions? |

Something small and easy, then move on to something a bit more involved once you are back in the swing of things.

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Have a few slow weeks finally, so I'm able to get some things done. I built a tower for my TC shifter.
Then I built linkage out of 2 heim joints, and some1/2"OD tube. I still need to finish my shifter handle, and get my jack shaft built. Then I think I'm gonna work on my rear axle. I need to swap in my 3.73 posi carrier, and get it cleaned up and painted. |

Its gotta snake under the tranny and down the drivers side. The square cutout is for the driveline.

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Small update, I've got the cab off and tipped over on its back so I can prep and paint the bottom. Had to do some small patches on 3 of the support braces. I've been using a paint stripping disk on my grinder and my cheap siphon sand blaster. Tomorrow I'm gonna go look at renting a small pressure pot blaster to finish it up. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Built the steering arm for my crossover steering. Welded the threaded ends into a piece of 1 1/4" DOM.
Everything fits and looks good and I've got lots of adjustability. |

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
I swear I had good intentions..........
The crossbar on my transfer case had some play in it and I wanted to tighten it up. I took the crossbar out, and drilled out the holes in the shift rails for bigger pins. However, when I tried to drill out the crossbar, it is so hard it actually ground down my drill bit. So now, the holes in my shift rails are 3/8", and the crossbar holes are 5/16". So my options are to disassemble my transfer case and track down some other stock rails, or twin stick it. I'm leaning towards twin sticks. |

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
Another thing on the diesel NV4500's whether GM or Dodge, is that the gearing is slightly different than the gas ones. I prefer the Dodge 98 up NV4500's.

Re: Ultimate work truck/ 70 K10 diesel
My dad has a 98 cummins dodge. Tranny seemed the same as my brothers 94. But I haven't driven either in quite a while. Can you shorten the shift throws on them? Thats the one thing I liked about the 6 speed. The shift pattern was smaller.
