Re: Cross Member Drop?

Been a couple months since I've done anything on this project. Had to work on the Honey Do list for awhile but I think I may be ready for some more truck work. I actually spent some time on it last night for the forst time in a long time. Cut out the speaker hole in the dash and welded it smooth then did some body work to that area of the dash and on the firewall around the distributor recess. Found a color I'd like to go with also, HOK Sunset Pearl so hopefully that's my motivation to get back to work. I hate bodywork. Hopefully more to show coming soon on this thing.

If that's the case you may want to skip the shave and chop, besides the fact that it'll look better.

What do you think if this concept?

Looks like everybody elses if your into that sort of thing
The shave wouldn't be bad at all but the chop would definetly be a ton of additional work. I was just goofing around anyway. I'll never actually chop it... but it is going tandem!

Yeah don't listen to mike he is just another old guy who can't deal with us younger generation thinking out side the box I say leave the hood and top stock and just go with the tandem set up. Kind of a concept vehicle design. I would also get it driving as is just to check out the steering and suspension set up and it may also help motivate you to just to the next step. So are you just going to back 1 1/2 it or dry and do stock frame rails extended?

Re: Cross Member Drop?

Been working front-end sheet metal making it all straight and pretty. All the sheet metal work is done on the cab, doors, front, etc except for the rear portion of the tunnel. That will have to wait for the t-case to be located so d-shaft clearance can be double checked, but all the rest of the metal work is basically done, ready to sling some mud now and get it in finish primer, then blow it apart to jam it and paint inside the cab. I wont start the rear portion of the frame until I get to this stage.

I also fab'd a forward tilt hood. Still have to finish the guides for the rear corners of the hood and reinforce the rad support to handle the extra stress, but the hinge is done and it works great. I'll try to get some pics soon.

Thanks for the interest!

Re: Cross Member Drop?

just a heads up for the all tandem fun, in case you havent seen it yet, http://www.offroadchat.com/index.php? has alot of info on tandem axle conversions and their company site www.usa6x6.com which seems to be not working at the moment. hopefully you can see the 'gear over box' they use, which is simply a transfer case mounted on the front of the middle axle.
btw, awesome project, i love tandems!

Re: Cross Member Drop?

Thanks for the tip. Yep I've known about USA6x6 for a long time. I was into the offroad thing for the past 7 years pretty deep with a 1 ton Jeep I built up and finally sold it last year. A good friend of mine also had a 6x6 Volvo military vehicle from Sweeden that he built up and wheeled with us. Cool stuff. The USA6x6 conversion box is definelty cool but way pricey for my budget. I'll be using an old school way cheaper method to acheive the tandem set-up. But I do appreciate the info, Thanks!

Still need to put the rollers and guides for the rear corners of the hood, but I've got that worked out how to do it. Also the little springs on the hood end of the hinge are probably temporary. I'll switch to gas cylinders look for a cleaner before I call it done. There is a ton of stress on the top of the core support wiith that heavy hood hangiong out there like that. Waiting on a buddy of mine to bring me some 1/4" stainless rod. This will be used to make tie-rods which will run from the top of the core support back to the firewall. As it is right now, it actually moves the core support out some (bending it) with the weight of the hood pulling it forward. Tie-rods will fix this and keep a classic look. About all of the old cars had tie rods anyway. Stainless so I can polish them and make them pretty.

Looks like the host server where the pics are located is moving today. My pics aren't in my gallery there anymore must have gotten crossed up. I'll reload them again and fix the links when i get home today.
