Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Some progress today. Got it pulled and started cleaning the engine compartment:
Out with the old::. Just cleaning::. This is how the PO assembled the motor. Every gasket on this 305 was glued, lol. I had about 7lb's of oil pressure since I've had this truck. Found a lot of rubber in the oil pump when I bought this thing. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Got it in and running, yea!!! I finished around 6:00am this morning. I couldn't get to some of the brackets and pulley's cause I was doing it by myself and had to have it done by today.
Oh well, just some minor wiring and a little painting on the accessories. I'll post some shots later, I have to get ready for work soon......... |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Nice choice on engine, for the price you can't go wrong. I think you'll be happy. I had one in mine (going 6.0 now) and loved it, never let me down.

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Thanks guy's. I'm really liking this motor, much better than that old noisy 305 bad crank embarrassment I was driving. It does overheat but from what I hear throughout the forum is that it could be due to friction being new.
I'll keep an eye on it and keep you posted. I still need to tweak the carb and timing a bit but it runs great. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
I agree Jtrux, shouldn't be happening. I thought I heard somewhere to change the T-stat and burp the block? Has anyone heard such a thing?
I thought I would change the clutch fan (although I didn't have an issue with the 305) and see what happens. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
I feel pretty dumb now. I installed the fan shroud and now my temp seems to be staying down where it's supposed to be, lol. I never knew what a difference they really made, my 305 never had any issues running without it.
Still have a small exhaust leak at the header gasket that really bugs me. I'll try and tighten those soon as it cools. Last edited by my90k5; 07-16-2010 at 02:00 PM. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Some before and after pic's. I'm still cleaning up the wiring and running the plug wires along the valve cover billet brackets (not in the photo's). I didn't get to all the accessory brackets (clean and paint) but I can do that as time permits.

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Finally got my plug wires ran and fan shroud installed. Still working on the wiring and some minor painting.
Edit ::. Did you know that if it rains and you open the hood on these trucks the water pours right down on your engine? lol Last edited by my90k5; 07-21-2010 at 08:31 PM. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Already put 300 miles on the engine, lol. Can't help but drive it especially with the top off. Seems to be getting better or I'm just learning how to drive it properly. Proper timing and tweaking the carb is key.
Great little motor in my opinion. Now I've got to put the top back on and go to work, |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
I know I've heard the double wall top's sag but how bad is bad? Should I look for another or keep? I may look around before I spend time painting this one.

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
I've never seen one that didn't sag. As far as the shroud goes, I did the same thing, ran my engine without it and when I put it on...BIG difference. I was probably as surprised as you were at how much they actually did.

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
The "AFTER" engine shots look great......!
The only distraction seems to be the rusty brake reservoir, if you can brush on one of those "looks like cast iron" metal paints I think that would really give you a complete look in there. -G

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Hey! great idea -Greg72. I seen someone in here did that paint on his xfer case and it turned out nice (trimmed covers in grey). I'll see if I can't find that build thread, he mentioned the paint he used.
I'll give credit as soon as I locate it: Found it. It's from "Rack Man". He did an awesome job on his drive train using Eastwood "Spray Gray". You can see it here Rack Man "I used Eastwood "Spray Gray"....for all my cast parts.....and Eastwood "Detail Gray' on the parts that I wanted to stand out a bit" (Rack Man) Last edited by my90k5; 07-24-2010 at 12:17 PM. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Yep, I have several cans of each of those two Eastwood colors in my shop also and some of their Alumablast for aluminum looking parts. Good stuff.

For anyone trying to connect their Vapor Canister, this is what mine looks like and how I hooked it up. I'm running the Edlebrock carb.

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Just more cleaning. I got rid of some surface rust today and now I have to live with the primer until I tear it down. Gives me the motivation to just do it, lol.
These body mounts look like someone stepped on some tomatos. |

Re: Yes another 72 build thread
Well the anxiety was getting to me, I had to see what was ahead of me as far as rust repair. I knew the rockers had to be replaced but I really wanted to see what shape the tail section was in. Really not as bad as I anticipated. Some shots:
