Re: The MONEY PIT

Sandblasted the inner fenders and the 2101 intake. Put a coat of clear on it to help with stains.

Re: The MONEY PIT

I also read the post (great instructions) from ChiefRocka about splitting the brakes. Went down to Advanced Auto and the new master cylinder will be in tomorrow $15.00!

Here is a picture of my old master cylinder .

Making you feel lazy? You've only been at it since Aug and you're making a lot of progress. You are also doing a great job documenting and taking pictures.

My build is just enough to get it back on the road with a little style and horse power.

I got the first coat of paint on the firewall and frame today. I know the suspension looks like crap but that's phase IV.

Are those vent windows that came with the frames attached?
Where did you get them?

The frame and windows came stock. The window seal kit came from LMC.

Re: The MONEY PIT

Ok, here is a quick list of items I've purchased to get this back on the road, any major mistakes?

Removing links

Just a reminder, I'm replacing a 230 with a '71 350. I've got to put all new bolt ons and the radiator was shot.

Is the water pump a long or short and what alternator should I go with?

Thanks

Re: The MONEY PIT

These trucks with V8's originally came with short water pumps. A lot of people go with the long water pumps because the brackets and pulleys are easier to find. The SWP brackets and pulleys can be found though, just gotta look. I see them on ebay quite often. On a '71 350 you can use SWP brackets for pickups up to '72

Re: The MONEY PIT

I went down and picked up a short water pump today but it hits the below tab, timing? Is this something that I remove or should I go with a long water pump?

Re: The MONEY PIT

I also picked up a rebuilt 700R4 yesterday for $800 that included the dipstick, TV cable, and 12 months 12,000 mile warrenty. I think this was a pretty good deal?

As you can see it has a red (hot wire) coming off of it. The trans guy told me to run it to a switch in the cab and turn it on and off depending on where and how fast I'm driving highway or city. The trans is a 86 model?

The other picture is my paint job.

I guess I need to find away to post pictures in a more timely manner.

Here is a picture of my sandblaster, with a before and after shot of the inner fender.
I'm using sifted sand from Home Depot.

That timing tab is the one used with the long water pump. To use a short water pump, that tab will need to be removed and you will need the timing tab that bolts on with two of the timing cover bolts like this
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...1&autoview=sku
Just make sure you get the correct one for the diameter of your balancer. The one in the link is for a 8 inch balancer.

Edit: After thinking about it, if you change to a short water pump and change the timing tab, you'll need to change the balancer also. Otherwise the timing mark will be off. So you'll just have to decide which way you want to go...long or short.

Re: The MONEY PIT

Please forgive my igornace (sp). I don't recall ever seeing a timing tab in that location. It will be hard to see the tab with everything on the engine. The ones I've seen are in the 2:00 position looking at the front of the engine. Is that motor a fresh rebuild or what's the story. Have you confirmed that the #1 is at top dead center "TDC" when timing mark is lined up?

I found this on another site, "Also, on a 350, the timing tab on the engine is on the drivers side, where it is right on the top center of the timing chain cover on the 305. It is possible that if you re-used the crankshaft dampener from the 305, the timing mark on the dampener assembley itself is not going to line up with the 350's timing tab." Guess I'll go find TDC and remark?

Re: The MONEY PIT

Make sure you use a respirator when you're blasting. If you read on the side of that bag of sand from Home Depot you'll probably see a warning about not using it for sandblasting. It's probably got free silica in it which is not good for the lungs.

Re: The MONEY PIT

Thanks, it's been slow going but I hope to have it back on the road in the next 10-14 days.

Ok, does this sound right?
1. It looks like the timing cover and damper came off of a sbc 305. I verified that the black line that lines up with the tab is TDC.
2. If I take and mount the chrome tab to the cover at the 2 o'clock position, draw a new line on the damper, I can remove the existing tab off of the cover, correct?
Or
3. Should I replace the damper and then add the new chrome tab?

Thanks
