Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I welded in the inner seams and the interior screws. I wanted a smoother look and it will make it easier to paint

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I made plywood inner panels for the upholstery. I will have all these panels covered in fabric. I used plastic "Christmas tree" fasteners to hold the panels to the metal.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I did a thorough mock-up trying to find any "bugs" before paint. Was able to make a short trip next door to the school, first time I've ever driven it. A little cold with no windows or windshield, but still awesome!

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

Into the paint booth for the start of a LOT of block sanding. Sprayed some guide coat on today. I did all my metal work and rust removal a few years ago. This included new rockers, floors, inner door bottoms, door skins, rear quarter patch panels and other misc. rust removal.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

Looking great! Did you investigate using the entire a/c-heat system out of the 1987 donor Suburban body?

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I did look at using the donor AC, it was just too big and bulky to fit with the 61 inner fenders.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

Lots and lots and lots of block sanding is finally done. Time to clean the paint booth and shoot some color.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

Here are a few pics going through the paint process. It was too large to paint everything at one time. I masked the top off at the drip rail line and painted it the next day.

Gave the frame one last wash before I said good by to it for the last time. The suburban and frame are hopefully together forever now!

I got the seats back from the upholstery guy. The turned out better than I expected. I'm really happy with the way they look.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

Just got the inside panels done last week. The square ones are going to go on the inside of the back doors. I also had him cover the original inside door panels with cloth. Also shows the rear speakers installed, kinda a poor picture

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I've been wiring it over the last few weeks. I have the steering column installed, the brakes are all hooked up. All it needs is a gas pedal and seat to take it for a spin. I also have installed the F-150 dash vents and the stereo. I ended up changing the exterior color from my original plans so I took the gauges back to Speedhut and had them re-work them with a black background, different bezzels and different needles

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I decided I wanted LED taillights. I could not find anyone who makes bolt in LED taillights. I figured out a way to make my own for $30. I started with semi truck trailer sealed LED taillights. I used a saw and cut the lens off. Those are reproduced lenses I picked up off Ebay. Very high quality and fit perfectly

The following is my process for making LED Taillights. Below are pics of me cutting off the Sealed Light lens.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

Its hard to see in the photo, but there is a clear potting resin around all the LEDs and the circuit board. I imagine this will give it a long life bouncing around in the back of a Suburban.

Because the plug on the back made them to thick to fit behind the stock lens, I had to cut off the plastic surround. I then used a grinder to grind the contacts down flush with the plastic and soldered on some wires.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

I used some electrical tape to insulate my new connections from the housing. I then used double sided tape to mount the new lights in the housing. The new LED basically squeezes between the foam double sided tape and the factory lens.

Re: 61 Suburban 4x4 on 87 Frame

The final Product. I spent about $30 on the sealed LED truck lights and it took me about 30 minutes to do it. Hopefully they will be brighter and safer than a stock bulb
