Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
I don't know why people call our trucks old pieces of junk and say we should get something new. All that is built is crap nowadays. Everything is made so cheap and doesn't last like it used to.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
I really don't care what any one thinks of my 72, but it does get frustrating at times listen to peoples mindless banter. I have a neighbor who buys 2 new cars every 2 years or so, and a new harley 2-3 times a year. He informed me that I would not be able to buy parts for a truck that old. How stupid could he be? He has seen 9 of these trucks come and go over the past 14 years, a few of which had a nice show career. He did not know what to think when I whipped out a brothers catalog. The other neighbors hate the 5 am cold morning starts, and the car alarms being set of on our narrow streets. The teachers and faculty at the elementary school that my children attend, are scared to let my children get in my truck. My sons 2nd grade teacher covers her mouth/nose when she escorts him to the truck, I did not know it was capable of transmitting airborne communicable diseases. But everywhere else I go, it gets thumbs ups, waves, pictures snapped etc. But we are the few who love these trucks, and will run them until the feds pull fossil fuel. Who cares, they're ours, they're paid for, and they make us who we are.

FAR OUT, someone thinks that the "OLD" truck will rub off on them and cause cancer. Now that is a hoot. Just to make it better, I would put the rattiest muffler I could find on it and get me a set of the bull units to hang on the back. Better yet a set of longhorns mounted on the hood. Prissy cell phone yakking dummies. |

when i had my c10 and gas was 4$ a gallon i was filling up at the exxon and a 30something women started insulting me telling me how i was ruining the plant with my old (gas guzzler piece of trash) so i explained to her how much harmfull stuff the making of her honda did to the earth and that i was preserving an old car so another new one would not have to be made of the precious materials her honda was made of. she just stared at me then said (go green) and got back in her car.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
Hum lets see,
old vs new Alternator $30 or $300 Starter $25 or $350 Work on it myself or $75 an hour to someone else Paid for when I drive it home or paid for in 6 years A great investment now for cheap or a $45,000 investment for $70,000 (after interest, etc) Increases in value everyday or decreases in value EVERYDAY If I had $45,000 ($70,000) to spend on my ride I could have all of my rides perfect and still have money left over to buy more "pieces of junk".

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
My 3 older brothers gave me alot of crap over my $800 piece of "junk", but once I tuned her up, and thrushed the exhaust I only see green envy in their eyes! Now any time I have a weekend project/ fix they can't wait to get their hands greasy too. Little sis sees alot more of her male relatives now. Another good side story..... My shy 18 year old daughters' mazda was in the shop, and she wanted to use my car to go out on Fri. night, I suggested that she take the old chevy. She cringed a little but agreed. The next day she told me about all the fights she almost got into because of jealous girlfriends. The boys at the local hang out swarmed her and Ol' Betsy, and and made her queen for a night. Needless to say my husband is getting tired of all these redneck boys swarming around our house all of a sudden.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
I've never had anyone say anything negative about any of the old trucks I've had over the years (at least not to my face) actually, I usually get positive comments, thumbs up etc, the people who can't keep their negative thoughts to themselves regarding what kind of vehicle one of us is driving have nothing better to do and probably like to "share" their views with a wide variety of friends, family, aquainttances,in short their momma's never taught them better or they're just plain rude or arrogant and probably don't know a wrench from a hammer.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
When I was 15, I bought a 71 chevy 1/2ton 250 i6 with a T350 tranny for $125. It was an old farm truck of my grandmothers. My mom gave me nine kinds of heck about that truck. It drove home though. I wound up putting a fresh 250 in it before I turned 16. That truck would bark second if you let the tranny shift itself even. My stepdad said it might get me through highschool. My mom always referred to it as a money pit, POS, you name it. Asking why I didn't buy something new. She more than anyone should have known that I had no money. You have to have a job to get money, money to get a car, a car to get a job.
That truck was the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It got me through highschool alright, and 4 years of college, my second year out of college I was still driving it in primer when I pulled into my driveway and started tearing it down for a good resto-mod. In that eight years I drove that truck everyday and never once did I flatter my mom by asking her to come get me when it broke down, because it just wouldn't leave you stranded. Only twice did I have to walk. Granted there were a few times I had to bypass the burned out solenoid with a screw driver to get it started or do a quick wiring patch before driving home, but that old truck never let me down. All said and done before I tore it down for the rebuild, I only had about $1000 invested in it, but my mom never would admit she was wrong about that truck. Then again she never saw the irony in calling me an SOB either. |

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
Awesome thread. I sometimes catch sh1t when driving the '57 pickup around, but it doesn't bother me a bit, I love every thing about that truck... It's older than dirt but she just doesn't leave you stranded! Me and my dad were 40 miles from home and the piston cracked..... It started smoking and sputtering, but WE DROVE IT HOME. They just don't make them like they used to.
BTW, the story with the kid with 5 summer jobs is awesome...... That motor sounds TIGHT.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
When I was still in high school I had a few guys talk sh*t about my truck but it was still louder than most without a hole in the glass packs heehee. I went to the pecan festival and was looking at a few old chevys like mine well except the gmc on it. A guy from my high school said dream on and he walked off and then came back and said it would a sweet pos if you did fix it up and put a big motor in it. Its so funny cause he didnt know what a big block is. I have people still wanting to buy it but wont sell it. I had someone that went to my job and said they didnt know how they were going to pay for the new vehicle they purchased because of gas prices during the summer.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
This thread was a blast to read!
My wife absolutely hates my ride...although she actually likes a nice 67-72 fleet, she hates mine because I shouldn't have lowered it, it's too loud, I love it more than her, etc. What's always been funny to me is why people are so interested in what we drive? I've never walked up to anyone and commented on what vehicle they should or shouldn't drive; I've never asked someone "why put money into this pos?"; isn't it strange? I have had people tell me I'm a bad person for driving a gas guzzler, and I can't really argue, but I bet they couldn't argue if I said they were gas guzzlers because of all the trips they make to the mall!

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!
In a small town long ago an old man had a real old truck. He lived in a nice middle class neighborhood and all the neighbors hated his truck. It had seen many years of rough work and had all the wear and tear and patina to show for it. It just didn't fit in with the nicer, newer vehicles and nice homes. He was asked many times to get rid of it but he refused. There was no law against it and he liked his old truck.
One day the town leaders decided to have a nostalgia day and everyone was to dress accordingly. A parade was planned with all the vintage vehicles they could find. Well, they looked pretty hard but no one had a vehicle that looked original enough. There were lots of rat rods, lowered and bagged low riders, spiffed up old cars with superb paint jobs, but the townspeople were looking for an old looking vehicle they could ride in that depicted the era as it was then. Well, the old man heard about it and drove his old truck to show it to the leaders. They were amazed! That was exactly what they were looking for. They asked him if he would lead the procession and he agreed to do it. On the day of the parade they all sat in the back on bails of hay waving at the people. The old truck was a big hit. Made the evening and morning news and even had front page photos in the newspaper. The old man was happy. The neighbors decided they actually had a gem in disguise and never complained again. |

KCjones
I get the same kind of flack for riding metric bikes. People always asking me why I don't ride a harley or why do you invest so much money in a rice burner? I usually tell them my bike bikes cost half as much as a HD, look twice as good, won't leave a stain in my driveway and won't leave me walking. Now Im not baggin HD's or anyone that rides them, I just have to have something to say to these snobs that don't know squat about bikes and believe HD is the ONLY bike to own just because it says Harley Davidson.
