Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project

UGH...somehow must have crimped a speaker wire that is now shorting to ground, which is cause the radio to shut down...it keeps giving me a code to fix a speaker wire short...that means the whole dash assembly has to come off...why do I have so much trouble with the easy things, but no issues with the big stuff...

Radio, who needs a radio?

Can't wait to hear your opinion of the Infinity speakers. Considering them for my truck.

Edit,

Didn't mean to embed that. Had to use a short link.

Altec, the speakers sound fantastic for 3.5's, I am very pleased...however, shortly after installing them as I was jamming and grinning...the music suddenly stopped...dead silence...I looked at my head unit (Alpine) and the display said "DC ERROR"...I turned it off and back on, and the music came back...for about 10 seconds...

I downloaded the manuel for my head unit and it stated that the DC ERROR code meant that a speaker wire was shorting to ground and as a failsafe it shuts down the whole unit...

I disgustedly took my dash back off...traced the wires, checked polarity and could find nothing...I then disconnected the front speakers and ran the radio for 2 hours with only the back speakers...no problems...

I then re-connected the front speakers and left them sitting on the dash and they ran for an hour or so and no problem...I mounted the passenger side speaker - all good...started to mount the driver's side speaker (using the stock, original mounting brackets) and the second the 1st screw started to tighten - I lost power and got the DC ERROR again...this happened many more times

after lots of head scratching I took some large rubber washers, placed them between the mounting bracket and the metal dash and secured the speaker with zip ties...I know, HillJack enginerring, but guess what...3 hours later and it is still blaring and not a single hiccup...

now, someone Please explain this to me...and just for your enjoyment (against my better judgement, I am including a pic of my custom install

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project

That is a real head scratcher. Is the speaker connection maybe bumping the firewall/cab, or maybe the back of the gauge cluster? I'd be tempted to wrap the crap out of the connectors on the speaker with electrical tape and try it without the rubber. Maybe the rubber is spacing it up just enough not short?

Awesome though that they sound good. Guess I have my fronts decided on now. How do they react to EQing? do they get muddy if you bring the highs down?

Can't wait to see how the engine turns out!

Nope on the muddyness...they are pretty versitle little speakers...

and all the scenarios you mentioned were the same thoughts I had...nothing is touching nothing....it sits a good 2.5 inches from the gauge cluster, nowhere near the firewall or cab...the wires go into a hard, plastic connector that completly seperates the positive from the neg...etc, etc...I have a call into a buddy who does high end home theatre installs and all his guys moonlight doing stereo installs...maybe they can give some insight...

That is very encouraging! Since they would be my only fronts.

Let us know what he says. Would love to know what would cause it.

Glad they sound good buddy. The MacGyver job on the speakers is perfectly fine. I've seen car stereo and (many) car starter installers do much "rougher" installs, and they're supposed to be professionals. Keep up the good work. And if all else fails, MacGyver it.

I seem to notice that plumbing strap, and duck tape are the only thing most audio installers keep in their tool box.

Guess I'll be adding Infinity speakers to my birthday wish list... Which is in December...

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project

Taking a break from the interior for now...on the hunt for some decent buckets...gonna hit pick a part tomorrow...

Gonna work on the stance and exterior for a bit...bout got enough $ for a new paint job...can't decided to go with red again and black stripes down hood or black with red stripes...

the first 3 pics are how she sits now...the last (I borrowed from another thread) is the stance I'm going for...

NO ONE, and I mean no one, can come up with any kind of explaination for the speaker issue...just weird...but it is still cranking out the tunes...so I don't care!

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project

sorry I've been MIA guys...life has gotten in the way of progress...in fact, things have slid a little backwards...got the 396 all tore down, lubed up, sealed in plastic and sitting on the shelf...waiting patiently...

Some waterhead, mouth-breather broke in my truck and stole my Alpine head unit and in the process, screwed up my pretty dash...ugh

Now I have an ignition problem that (as of today) can't be solved...the dist. has all new guts and still nothing...tracing wires today...

oh, well...in the words of Robert Earl Keen..."The road goes on forever and the party never ends..."

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project

Been absent for quite a while...got layed off and things got rough for a bit...got back on my feet and caught up (kinda) on bills and I started thinkin about my rebuild again...in fact, last week, I was headin home late, thinkin abt what color I needed to paint the ole Girl, when this chin drooling, water head mouth breather in a wind-up toyotasaki comes flyin up behind me at 110mph swerves to miss me, over corrects and BLAM, SQUEAL, CRUNCH....ouch...

Well, good ole GEICO totaled her and would only shell out $3300.00 for her - I'm not sure, but I think that's a worse sin than takin a pee-pee in the holy water...Sooo, I bought her back for $2800 and she be...

Stop pulling your dash and just ohm each circuit at the head unit, you should get about 4ohms per channel. Also note the if you have a 2ohm speaker that can trip your protection or having 2 speakers on one channel. I hope it helps
