I did that. Took one from an old 69 Imperial along with the 727 and stuffed it in a '70.
Worked better than the paltry 350 that used to reside in there.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

I'd like to see a C-30 with a twin turbo Duramax. When i get the cash and shop to do it, it will be done. Only reason i want a Duramax is it is Chevy, and I have drove trucks with Powerstrokes, Cummins, and Duramax's. Nothing seemed to have the power and balls the Duramax does.

Anyone done a Duramax swap in a 67-72 truck? Thought I seen one a few months back but can't remember

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

I have a '91 S-10 with a 360 stroked Mopar. I was going to stick it in my '67 C-10 but decided against it. It would have been a lot easier. Those things are 3in wider than and 350 Chevy and 1.5in longer so it took a lot of cutting.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Planning on a 351 GMC big block V6 in my 67 GMC 4x4. Period correct upgrade, not too unusual since they came that way (well 305 was the largest V6 in a 4x4) .

I dream of an 8.1 or Dmax and allison in a longhorn though!

I've already put a 6.0L and 6L80E from an 09 Pontiac G8 in my truck. Now I just need to get it running. Should be a beast when it's going.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Im not too much for swapping engines myself, but this thread made me think of the old man. He could and would put anything in anything, and he laughed at people who thought you had to put a chevy in a chevy, etc. He said it was just some extra welding, no big deal! He was predominantly a chevy guy, but loved the mopar power and had a few of 'em in the late sixties(mostly 440 transplanted chargers). I know he had a '61 gmc stepside in 1984 that had a dodge motor in it, and a '60 or '61 ford f-100 that had a hemi or a 440 in the late seventies. He was an old racer that loved to stay on the gas, and both trucks would wake the neighborhood. He could drive like hell too, and was scared of nothing. I wish I had his motorhead knowledge.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Here's mine. I put a turbocharged Hummer diesel in my '67 C-30. It's further along than it is in these pics, but hope I can get it finished sometime soon.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Speaking of hampster wheels....

I'm currently working on a battery electric swap in a Japanese mini truck, Lipo4 batteries, 3 phase AC motor, direct drive, keeping the transfer case and 4wd. The motor we're putting in has more than twice the peak torque of the original 660cc 3 cyl gas engine, and it starts at 0 rpm. Should take off pretty quick.

I've often thought about an electric swap for my 67, the only thing I would really miss is the rumble of my 327 with dual glasspacks..... but I may have a solution.

Large twin shaft DC motor, 11" or 13", (can provide 300+ ftlbs of torque at stall) with a 2000 amp controller hooked with a clutch to a 5 spd overdive. At the front of the motor hook up a large displacement v twin motorcycle engine with a seperate clutch, (electrically activated). A Harley motor would be perfect, nice rumble, 100+hp should easily cruise on the hiway with the electric motor off and free wheeling, same rpm range as the DC motor and the DC motor can provide plenty of boost for hills and passing. The DC motor would provide more than enough tire boiling off the line power and short range cruising with the twin shut off and it's clutch released, while the V-twin would allow long range cruising on the hiway and when both are used in parralel you would have lots of power and a nice sound. A chopper style v twin with the motor by itself would be perfect.

Cheers,

Jesse

It is interesting that the black mid 70's Chevy truck has 6 lugs. Those some odd wheels as well.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Dad stuck a 4BT Cummins in a '66. My brother stuck a '71 472 Caddy in a '70 Ford with a 700R4 after he tore the turbo 400 out twice. He twisted the FLEXPLATE in half with the 700R4. The GM motor made a decent Ford out of it.

I've heard that swap is really hard since you cannot carbuerate that engine. You need all the wiring and ECM that is in the 2001+ trucks supposedly. Maybe someone makes a standalone controller now, I'm not sure but its been discussed before. Either way, it would be cool as hell if you could get it to work.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

my work truck is a 2002 dodge 3/4 ton with a cummins diesal. that would be an awesome motor for an old 3/4 ton chevy. My boss put a mechanics box on it, and when I am loaded down with fuel and tools, etc. the truck is over 10,000 pounds and I still can get 19 mpg on the freeway with great power. It has an edge chip plugged into it that helped performance. 225,000 miles on it and it runs like brand new. to bad newer diesal motors are so damn expensive. plus fuel costs more than gas. another pipe dream that I will never do.
