Re: New project & forum jumper

been out of town for a while. Thanks for the comments
I will try to answer questions.
I hope to lay the running boards, but I don't have the tires bought yet, the back end of running boards won't touch the ground, but thr fwd end should.
I am running the 4L60E trans.
I found some 98 camaro exhaust manifolds that tuck real close to the motor, perfect fit. I am also using a new wireing harness from Speartech & rework computer located under the seat in the cab.
I will post some more pics as I start putting back together. I still need to spray on the Lizard skin insulation in the cab before re-assembly.

Hey kid

What year is your engine? Do you have the electronic throttle body (drive by wire) if so are you going to run it or switch it out to a cable driven throttle body? I chose to by a cable driven throttle body and scrap the drive by wire. When I brought my engine I was told it was the 2002 Tahoe Engine but after further investigation I found out it is a 2005 which gave me that drive by wire throttle body.

Re: New project & forum jumper

Kabwe, the motor is a 2004 out of a GMC Serria. I am using the drive by wire. I was concened that it would have some delay in it, but I have ran it and am very happy with the response it has. I did question this issue when I talked to John at Spertech & he assured me that there would be no "lag" & he was right, throttle response is damn near like a alcohol motor!l

I'm using the drive by wire also. How much was the harness and reprogram? Also, I would like to install cruise control, do you know if they can do that with drive by wire? Thanks,

Rob

So I take it you have the electronic gas pedal assembly? Could you take a pic of that when you get a chance so that I can see how its mounted?

thanks

Re: New project & forum jumper

Thanks Hartrod, I have to look for a padel if I decide to keep the drive by wire, I just brought a cable driven throttle body off ebay for 58 bucks. I have to decide what I'm gonna do since I read you guys are keeping the drive by wire and like it.

Re: New project & forum jumper

Hart Rod,
John at Speartech charged me about $1150 for the new custom harness made to my specs & reprogramming the computer (included a new wire harness b/t the throttle pedal & box). Alot of money, but very good quality product. Took about 30 minutes to hook up & fired right up with no problems.
I just got back home Friday night & have been applying some "Lizard Skin" to the cab this weekend. I will try to post some pics along with a write up of my opinion of this product later.

Kid,

Thanks for the info. I called and spoke to John. I think that is the route I"m going to go. I'll probably have him modify the factory harness since it's only got 10 miles on it. I'm also thinking about buying some programming software and doing the computer myself. Seems like quite a few people are doing these LS1 conversionsm that it might be worth offering the service (cheaper than the $300 though). I've always wanted try it, this might be as good of time as any. BTW, what is lizzar skin?

Before you get too deep into Lizzard Skin take a look at Hy-Tech Thermal Solutions!!

Kid, can you post some pictures of your manifolds installed? Do you have the part number? What motor mounts did you use?

Re: New project & forum jumper

Well, I got finished this evening with the insulation. After much research, I thought I would try the Lizard Skin product. It will be some time before I will drive this truck to see just how good this stuff works.
I could not find any detailed info on this stuff so i am postig my thoughts of this product to let all deside what route they might want to go.
The product is expensive at approx. $526.00 with spray gun from Summit.
Another disadvantage is the "spray" application does create some overspray, so be sure to cover everything else up well, besides masking the project.
I put 5 coats of the "SC" (sound control) & still had just a little left over.
The "SC" bucket was 170.00.
The other bucket was the insulation & I got 4 coats out of it.
Total thickness after completion of both products was .080"
Bottom line, my opinion is this stuff better work damn good because it took me all weekend to get the job done. Not tomention the mess I have to clean up. I did my 68 with asphalt mastic sheet (dynamat) & 1/2" thick "jute" backing. This process was less than $200.00, took about the same amount of time, & alot less messy.
I will reserve my final opinion till I take the truck for a spin. I will post some pics of the instl.

Re: New project & forum jumper

here is a close up showing the thickness from some tape over a fire wall penetration.
total thickness is .080" with what appears to be .040" Sound control & .040" insulation.

Re: New project & forum jumper

Hart Rod,
I will try to find the part #'s for the manifolds. Here is a pic from behind that shows the manafolds "tucking" in to the motor real well. If you want some pics from other angles, just let me know & I can take some more.

I made the motor mounts cause I was not sure any others would fit where I wanted the motor to sit. I think the ones Street & Performance sells might have worked, but at well over $100.00 I didn't want to take the chace.
I made the pattern from card board, then cut the pieces from 1/4" plate.
They rest on stock 1984 "G" body rubber mounts

Re: New project & forum jumper

Kid, How does the Lizard Skin do at covering up imperfections? I was thinking about doing that to my Camaro to cover some of the UGLY that I caused when replacing the floor pans, mostly weld seams. I am going to hit it with seam sealer before I do anything else. I was thinking about only doing the under side because there is going to be carpet on the inside. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Bernie
