Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

Has anyone every put one of these behind a 250 L6? I'm lazy and often work 60+ miles from home, love the sixer so I'm looking at options. What sort of extra stuff has to be moded and changed. What about shifters? I've currently got the farmers 4 speed, first so low I can pull stumps!

Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

Yeah a 700 or 200 will work behind a 6, you'll need an auto crossmember and you have to cut out the 4-speed crossmember. You may need to get a driveshaft made, as for the shifter, just get a column out of an auto truck and you can column shift the OD trans.

BTW talk about back from the depths of dead! This is a 3yr old thread!

I read this same article and was suprised to learn the 200 was superior to the 700! I always thought the opposite. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go with the 2004R over the 700R4!

Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

I just put a 2004r behind a stock 250 6cyl (monojet carb & hei dist) and it's a great combo. With the conveter locked it will cruise 75 very easy with the 3.73 rear and 28 inch tall tire.

I'd love to know the specifics... parts etc - drive line, shifter, converter - whatever.

Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

You need a flexplate, (small tooth count) block mounted starter, (the one with one long bolt and one short bolt) a radiator with a cooler, the cooling lines, an auto shift column, the tv cable linkage, and an auto trans crossmember. My three speed standard drive shaft was the correct lenght.

Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

Due to it's smaller size, the 200R4 is the same size as the TH350 and 400 if I recall right.

Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

Longhorn man mentioned Art Carr for the 200 4r. Here's his site. Great guy, very Knowledgeable. I'll probably go this route with my GMC.

Re: 200r4 vs 700r4

If you want a pampered junkyard 200-4R check out the 80s model square body cadillacs. I've had 3 of them 82, 84 & 88 and they all had 200-4R's and almost all of them will have a weak 307 olds or weaker 4.1 (HT4100) V8 in front of them and none of them have ever been over 70 MPH (except mine lol). The 4100 never made it over 100,000 miles without blowing a head or breaking a crank and yes I experienced both. The 307 never dies but has no balls at all so check the mileage if it is a 307. You'll have to buy a lockup kit to make 4th gear lockup. Very simple pressure valve and a plug for the tranny come provided in the kit, hook up a hot and ground and your rolling in 30 min.
