Re: Paint Your Truck With A Roller!!!

Just because you can get ahold of a spray gun doesnt mean you will end up with a body shop paint job. If you cant afford it or dont know how to do it, a roller or a brush may have the same overall result or better than a gun if you dont know how to do it right. I havent tried it & dont really plan on it, all Im saying is...Ive seen some discusting looking paint jobs that came out of a gun too..corn

Well I don't have a good place to spray paint so a roller that doesn't kick up dust is a plus for me. Plus there's no overspray with a roller that's pretty handy.

Yeah I was THAT close to going aqua/white too but it seems like whenver I see a 67-72 truck it's aqua or gray so I decided on tan/white instead, plus I already had new tan seats

Re: Paint Your Truck With A Roller!!!

i've read the whole tread 40 plus pages , i think its a good way to do up a clunker or daily driver .
the pickup i have at the moment has a cab as rotten as a pear and a reasonable second hand cab over here in holland europe is bout 750 euro.
since im planning on a lot more changes to the original truck than just the cab i want to trade this truck in for one with more of the options i want on it , so this is a real help in getting my rustbucket a bit more looking like a desent truck to be able to sell it on (all the other sheetmetal is practicly new and it has a good engine and trans in it i whont be ripping someone off with it ) if it doesnt shine as a showcar i dont care as long as it looks ok from a couple a meters and makes the used cardealer think its a good seller .

Re: Paint Your Truck With A Roller!!!

Oh well the roller paintjob is likely not gonna happen, I found an "adult education" nightclass in autobody, they got all the cool stuff, awesome paint booth, guns, frame machine, welders, so I am taking the class and you're pretty much expected to bring your own car in to paint while you take it so looks like I'm likely gonna end up spraying it and not rolling it, we'll see.

It's not that I didn't WANT to spray it right, it's just that I didn't know HOW and had nowhere to learn, but I found a place to learn and part of the learning involves having a place to DO it so hell, I'd be a dummy not to use this for all it's worth.

One of the dudes in there, it's his 5th time taking the class, he's painted several cars haha.

Edit: of course I already took the windows, lights, grill, etc off the truck so instead of putting it back on, I hit ebay and found myself a tow dolly for $300 and snagged it so I can just tow it back and forth to class, throw a lawn chair in there to sit on to drive it into the shop, and go to town on it

You gonna leave the lawn chair in when your done? Maybe get some webbing to match the paint? (kidding)

You should see where my dad does painting............It is amazing what you can do when you know what your doing. Alot of body guys(him included) have/and still do paint in gravel floor buildings and get finishes that would blow your mind. I guess when you grow up doing without, you learn how to make due..........

You waste like 30% by spraying (less with HVLP).

Re: Paint Your Truck With A Roller!!!

I have done this . I painted a 1988 Do*ge p/u with jon boat paint from the hardware store. 2 quarts paint 1 quart mineral spirts total cost $28 . I was an old plow truck and the finders were rusted around the lips . bought cut out flares and hacked all the rust out ran 33" with no lift. Spent 4 days preping truck with 80 grit and a d/a. It cam out good . Painted the inner fenders and firewall of my 1980 camaro with rustolem and a roller came out pretty good . Just painted the frame and firewall of 68' with a roller today gloss black . There is a body shop close by that does single stage paint jobs for $699 with 2 year warranty, so I won't be doing the outside.

Re: Paint Your Truck With A Roller!!!

Right on. I have experience with doing this the Rustoleum method with a foam roller. Worked out pretty damned well consider a gun wasn't used - no runs. I'm pretty happy with teh results on my friend's Impala so far. Lots of other posts about this here in the forum. Good stuff Welcome to the forum!

Re: Paint Your Truck With A Roller!!!

A couple things:

#1 welcome to the board
#2 it really helps if you use a little punctuation, I'm not trying to be a grammar nazi here but there's not a single period, capital letter, or other punctuation in your whole little tirade there making it extremely hard to read
#3 have you even looked at the results some of these fellas are getting with their cheap paint and roller? If I had a rough looking old car (like a 93 Ford Escort or my dad's 94 F-150) I wouldn't want to spend even $500 on a paint job. Sand, it, scuff it, and roll it with some rusto and run with it.

While I don't plan on rolling my truck anymore, because I managed to find a body class to take, if I get my hands on an old beetle bug (which I'm kinda keeping an eye out for) I will roll it almost without a doubt.
