Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
Would a Cummins out of a 91 Dodge 3/4 ton drop into a truck or blazer in front of a TH400 with no mods?

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
This is the board I frequent to gather info
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php The 6.5 and 6.2 are supposed to bolt right up. They don't make too much power so the th400 should do just fine

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
I didn't mean for this to turn into a b@tch fest and Im sure others didn't either Im just defending good ol' chevy's, I was originally trying to make a recommendation cause I own a 6.5 and its a great truck and Im sure you can find one cheaper than a cummins and someone had to bring up who's balls are bigger and respecfully I had to stand up for myself, even though I dont really care who likes what or what this guy puts in his truck everyone has there own opinion on whats better, wait isn't that the point of forums anyway. To each his own, Im a diesel fan in general so whatever you come across that works Id put in it.

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
I have a turbo 6.2/TH400 in my truck with 3.73 gears.
1st isn't low enough for hauling and 3rd isn't high enough on the highway. Looking for that extra gear pisses me off every time I drive the truck. The TH400 has only 'Sploded on me once, but I think it was rebuilt before I got it. The only way I can see the 6.2/6.5 as better than the Cummins is price. Just bear in mind the electronic injection pump on early 24 valves was a failed design used while the common rail injection was worked out....not that GM didn't have similar issues.

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
All diesels have there injection pump issues, the pumps on the 6.2 and 92-93 6.5 is a great pump but the elec. pumps on 94-2000 on the 6.5's did fail the optical sensor goes out but ford and dodge had the same problems

The cummins is very long so you will need to use an electric fan unless you want to modify your fire wall. If you are seriusly thinking of doing this swap, let me know and I will get you more infomation. |

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
I'm going with a 6.5 Turbo in my '67 C-30. I already have the engine, and its an easy swap, but I would prefer a Cummins. I've had several 6.2's and 6.5's, and they are good engines if you know their quirks, but they were designed (by Detroit for GM) to be a light duty deisel. With 18:1 pistons, a gear drive timing set, a main stud girdle, and ARP main and head studs you can turn up the IP and bump up the boost, and get really decent power and still be reliable, but if you do the same mods to Cummins or Duramax, they are absolute BEASTS. The Cummins engines are used in much more rigorous applications than pickups, and they are stone reliable for the most part. The 6.2/6.5 are the cheapest, simplest diesel out there to swap over into an old Chevy.

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
Hey 72 Freak,my boat doesn`t have an anchor,Got any?I`m more mellow about it,now.I`m not picky,either.A 5.7,6.2,.6.5,6.0(DOH!!),or any failed motor will do.Heck,a crapped-out AOD,or Dodgem auto would work just fine,too.
They all have problems and there have been some great years for some.

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
Scott68-93-97: If there is a number or anything on the transmissions of the military H1's i'm working in a motor pool here in iraq and i could get you the serial number or whatever on it if that helps...they have the 6.5's but most of them are dogged out pretty bad. we have one or two that have some get up in them but not a whole lot. but we don't have the uparmored ones but those are also turbo'ed. the ones we have are in rough shape for the most part like i said one or two of them are in good shape but not many

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
Has anyone put a 6.5TD in one of these trucks with the turbo in the back (van, hummer type intake /exhaust manifolds) ?
Thanks, Willis

Re: Anyone gone with a diesel
I'm pretty sure you'd have to cut a big hole in the firewall, but an air filter in the glove compartment would sound super sweet.
