What has kept you focused on restoring your Classic Truck?

I don't know what keeps me focused, it's just something inside of me. I work until 10 at night and get up at 4 in the morning to work some more. Been that way for 20 years. One truck after another, 7 days a week.

my truck is good enough to drive and most of the work are mods for the end use (trailer towing). i am adding such things as sway bars, poly bushings, fresh synthetic fluids, braided brake hoses, tach and vac gages, etc. it needs to be pretty much finished by next spring because thats when i go pick up the family camper (71 holiday trav'ler 23 footer) at my grandmother's house two hours north of here. need to get the burb finished so i can work on the camper because both are headed for north/western mass for the northeast chapter chevy/gmc truck (and vintage camper) gathering in august. i bought the truck because i always wanted one 'cause my dad had one 20 years ago when i was a kid and i will have it as long as possible. its not just a project, its a lifestyle.....

The things that have given me focus on the old girl (the truck that is) would first and foremost the awesome people on this forum. I'm 29 years young and the experience available here put together with a little persistence got my 68 panel back on the road, And that leads us to #2 Driving it. Nothing feels like driving a 3 on the tree and a straight 6 with manual everything. People expect an old man driving the thing and they always look at me funny when they see me in it. And the last thing is the thought of my kids driving it, after I die of course, cause if i'm still here they can get their own damn old truck and we can fix it together.

My dad and i restored my truck 26 years ago when i was 14-16, it was my first truck. I was always tagging along to the race track with dad, we both had the bug. i lost him 5 years ago and i can't even bear the thought of selling it. i am starting the 3rd rebuid this winter, and my son is excited to help with it. i think i'm more excited to have my son out in the garage with me than working on the truck. i hope that he will be the 3rd genration truck nut.

Sheer determination and a whole lot of developed patience. This will most likely be the closest I get to owning a Cheyenne Super because my Sierra Grande longhorn is the equivelent there of. It has grown on me over the years. Soon, I hope I am driving every weekend. Great Post!!!!!!

What has kept me focused is I see 67/72 chevy truck all the time here in cali. work trucks, gardeners, beaters, old guy trucks we have it all. still running /working doing what they were designed to do. sounds strange but, I feel the need to reward them for ajob well done. also restore them as close as I can to how they looked when new. clearly these trucks are not 60 month trucks (like they build now).....Pat

My motivator is a letter from the county sayin that they have to be tagged, running and insured in 30 days or I have to build a garage. The temporary tent garages are not an option according to them either.

I like to think that what I rebuild today will be here long after I am gone. The first truck I rebuilt started when I was 14 and still needs the finishing touches. (a 1954 Ford F-100) It drives and looks great, just some small loose ends.
The second truck our 72 C-10 was basically rebuilt over 5-months. While my kids did not have much to do with the first, my son helped a bunch with the 72. I like the idea that each my daughter and son will have found memories of "our" trucks.

I started mine with my Dad when I was 14-15 yrs old. I guess determination is one factor. I still have a ways to go but after 17 years I finally bought wheels and tires for it. That's progress right?

I've gone through the selling stage 2-3 times but like you, had the little voice inside of me saying hold on to it. It's paid for and not costing me anything.

It'll be something I'll have forever too. Probably buried in it....

Going to a swap meet and seeing thousands of vehicles and not a single one of my year or style. Knowing I can drive down the road and have complete strangers wave and give you the thumbs up. Having 14 boxes of parts in the work shop full of "bling" waiting to be attached doesn't hurt either. Most of all it was this site full of friends that keep me excited and interested in bringing the Russ T. Bucket back to life. thanks to all.

I have zero focus. When it comes to cool old cars and trucks Im all over the place. I plan to do this or that, get moving in the right direction and something else catches my eye and off I go in a whole nother direction.

Even though I have just started actually working on my newest project, the 67....I have always kept the 72 around and hum'd and haw'd with it, had it on the chopping block then pulled it. My inspiration and focus is seeing old rides running around in prestine condition catching peoples eyes more then the new vehicles. My other aid is that I work on cars all day for a living...and Im just sick of the crap that is being made now a days....they dont make em like they used to.

I was tempted to so many times, but when I was driving home one day from work I saw a small car show and said to my self I'm going to have my truck there one of these days. That gave me enough of a reminder to why I started in the first place. To keep up my motivation I go to other car shows in the area and look at everyone else's builds on here.

Too many of my friends kept sayin "the 69 will never roll" or referred to my holding place for the parts as "the 69 graveyard". When people tell me something won't be done because I just won't ever do it, it gets done faster. I've got a picture of project copperhead on my background for my phone. Everytime I get a text or call I remember my truck. I can be found in four places at any given moment. Work, the kitchen, the bathroom, or the garage.

I paid $800 for my truck and blew the motor up 7 months later. Then was offered $1500 for it without the motor or tranny. If I wouldn't sell it then how COULD I sell it now?

And I have already decided that I will for sure be buried in my truck. With my hands glued to the steering wheel and my foot on the gas pedal which will be glued to the floor. ok maybe not....

Believe it or not, my build thread on this board kept me focused. I actually got excited about posting pics and info every couple of weeks. It kept me motivated enough to complete the truck.

This is what keeps me going. I've posted these in my build thread, but thought I'd post em here also. My mom found these pics of the two trucks my dad put together back in the early 80's. I was only 6. But I still remember like it was yesterday. He sold the mid/late 50's truck and then put together the 62.

I love the satisfaction of knowing that it was rebuilt by us here in my shop. Of course I keep messing with it every now and then.


I want this little guy to have it when he can appreciate it and hopefully it will never leave our family for any reason....
