Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

.045 is correct for HEI gap.

10 degrees is a good starting point, but you'll want tune initial/advance (see my .sig )

The two sets of holes in the carb are for different manifold types - you just need 4 studs/bolts, typically the inner set.

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

I just decoded the numbers on the blown motor (14010207) and according to this site it came out of a 80 to 85 Vette and it's a 350cid. Not sure if it's a 2 or 4 bolt main? All I can say is Wow! I really thought it was a 305. Sure didn't feel like a vette!

http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-ca...es.asp?group=6

Anyway, parts I was expecting today didn't show so not much going on here with the new motor.

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

Here we go, some more parts came in today. Motor mount brackets, hi-flow water pump, water neck, Center Force clutch, pressure plate and release bearing. Good news, I found the hood bolt I misplaced, bad news I can't find one of the exhaust bolts. Was able to bolt up the water pump and accessories. Tomorrow hope to do the flywheel, clutch set up, motor mounts, fuel pump. Then maybe I can stab the motor.

Camera freaked out in this pic...

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

After looking at the mounts a little more tonight it's become obvious they sent me the wrong parts. These will not work together. I'm itching to get back on the road so I'll probably use my old mounts and upgrade later.

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

Taking a break for a minute to post, then off to make the plug wires. Motor won't be going in tonight but probably Sunday.

Question, I've read where I need to prime the oil pump using a drill. What attachment do you use on the drill, I'm guessing this is a special tool or something?

New belts are on but loose until I put the fan on. Waiting till after motor is installed for this.

Thanks, I will pick one up tomorrow along with some plug wires. Turns out the plug wires I have from an old motorcycle project were the wrong size. The rubber caps were to big to go over these plugs...

Edelbrock fuel pump installed.

I went to screw on my new oil filter and found theres nothing to screw too!! I assume there is something I need to un-bolt from my old motor? There have been alot of things I've over looked being my first V8 install. Done plenty of VW motors, motorcycles, and a straight six in my jeep. I'd be lost without your help!

Thanks!

Oil Filter Mount?

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

You need an oil filter adapter. If you have an old sbc distributor. You can make a much better oil pump primer.

Cool, putting the oil filter adapter on list of things to get Sunday. I'm done working on it for the night, pretty much everything on now with the exception of distributor, plug wires, oil filter and adapter, valve cover breathers, and some carb and fuel pump fittings and fuel line.

Should there be a oring where the dipstick meets the block?

I drove this dipstick plug only halfway in in-case it ever needs to be removed later. Is this alright or should it be driven all the way in? Seems pretty tight in there now.

Just pull the oil filter adapter off your old engine.

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

Wouldnt it be better to have a new stiffer bypass spring than an old one?

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=238758

I have mine out on loan or I could post pictures.

I would have to say that it depends on the new oil pump pressure and volume and what filter is being used. All stock?

dirty oil bypassing the filter is much better than no oil because of plugged up filter and too stiff of a bypass spring.

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

I would much rather have filtered oil. Id rather not have the metal slivers and dust circulating in the system. Breaking in a new engine you should keep an eye on your gauges. Mainly oil pressure and water temp. Guess my thinking is with a weak bypass spring, it would be next to not running an oil filter. Wix (#51794) has a two quart oil filter that should be plenty big enough to not worry about oil starvation.

I run an adapter plate that doesn't have a pressure bypass valve. Haven't had any problems out of it. I also use good oil filters along with that oil filter adapter.

Re: Damn...Motor Just Blew! Need Advice!

Well, no motor install today. Went to install the release bearing and it turns out it was wrong. Walked up to the auto parts and they had a "Made in China" release bearing...I passed. Had them order me a quality one which should be here Monday. They didn't have the oil pump primer either. I'll try and make one out of my old distributor here in a minute. Only thing I've accomplished today was pulling the oil filter adapter from the old motor and making plug wires.
