Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
Haven't had the chance to post any progress, but I've done a bit other than just drive it. Had a ticking type sound out of the driver side exhaust, sounded like an exhaust leak. Well, it was. Here's what I pulled apart....(the pics are from my cell phone, sorry.)

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
So a customer came into work with an 85 C10 that had a blown head gasket. Wasn't worth it to him to fix so I bought it for $250. Has a 305 but a 4bbl intake and edelbrock 650 carb. My plans are also to strip all the front end off and convert my truck to power and disc brakes. Here's a few of the 85...

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
So my heads I tore down completely, bought a new valve, and sent everything off to the machine shop. Had it back the next day all cleaned up. Reassembled the heads and then the engine.

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
Need to get some better pics....So I cruised it to Colorado for Thanksgiving. Got 17mpg. Took about $90 to cruise one way. Not too shabby!

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
I wondered if you ever bought that 85 Chevy truck or not. Last time I talked to you it was kind of still up in the air whether you were going to. I'll bet that 283 runs a whole lot better than it did! It's a wonder it ran as good as it did with part of the valve gone!
Is the 17 m.p.g. with or without the overdrive trans? Can't remember which one you said it has. I knew you were going to buy an overdrive for it but don't remember if you did for sure or not. If it's not overdrive 17 m.p.g. is really good! ...Joe

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
It is the 700r4 trans but the lockup isn't connected. It does run LOTS better, not that it ran bad before. I took it out to the board meet this last summer and got about 20 mpg with the 2 bbl carb and a bad valve. Now I just can't keep my foot out of it.

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
Looking good Robert. Looks like those pistons have seen some miles. That snow look like fun to drive in. That's some good turn around time on the heads. Any chance you might want to get rid of 2 of those chrome rings on the rallys? Daren

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
I am going to run two of the rallys when I do the swap until I get the 6 lug rotors. The rest of the truck is a buddies. We split the cost and he is going to make a trailer out of the bed and frame. I might be able to get them though.

Looks like one heck of a deal for only $250. Good luck with the front end swap.

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
OK. So an update is in order. Alot has happened in the past few months. Those that know me, know. Broke the engine in the truck. Flat lobe on the cam and rings shot (burning 3-4 quarts of oil per week), timing gears exiting (well almost). So I had to build a new one and here are some before and after pics and a few fun ones in between....the number 2 cylinder exhaust lobe was beyond flat, it sits lower than the rest closed.

Re: 1969 GMC Pickup
The first new one is next...Ended up having a rod knock and more money. Cylinders had to be bored 30 over to make them round, so that meant new pistons, rings. Already was doing a full bearing and clean job. Ended up throwing in a new crank because he couldn't have mine sent off and back in the time frame I wanted. Decked the block and now, here is the first one....
