Things may not all be in order here... but who cares. right?
So I started a thread back in the middle of april... lookin for a seat cover, knew I didn't want to spend the $$ on redoin my seat... but sick of the old man seat cover.... well, I was askin for a seat cover, and this was offered for $150; (thread) I got Ron to pick it up for me, and he held onto it for a couple months till I went to his place for the big sandy board meet '08, and picked it up. Dragged it home, and slapped it in the burb asap; As many of you have heard me complain, I have a kerfaggled back, and leaning back helps me a ton. So I placed washers between the seat and the frame, then also between the frame and the floor (only in the front). Worked GREAT! A total of 4 washers, 2 on the top, and 2 on the bottom of the seat track (in case you need to do the same) I discovered a few years ago when i as cruisin in the old town car, that tilting the seat (had the 8 way power) made my back feel sooooo much better, so i replicated it in this, but in a non adjustable form. Cost, $150 Time, 3 months to aquire, and 45 min or so to install. (working alone) Last edited by Longhorn Man; 08-16-2008 at 11:12 PM. |

Engine time...
Again, this isn't all in order here... but here's the engine before, durring, and now... but still not quite done. Starting out with thise; Rip off the hood and pluck the engine out Make sure to put the coolant in a place the cat won't get to it (it's OK... my can't doesn't read very well) finish pullin it Then store it in a safe dry place... like the back of your truck. Money spent here, $15 for a 3 hr rental of the hoist, and I think $14 for a carb plate tool (love that piece) Time spent, all together, maybe 4 hrs tops. I saved $$ by getting the engine ready to pull, then running around the corner to rent the hoist. By having it for less than 3 hrs, I was charged $15 instead of the 30 - 40 for a 24 hr rental. I had suspected this engine had been cracked open. When i first got it home, the valve covers were gushing oil, and when I replaced the gaskets, i was amazed and shocked at the total lack of sludge in the top of the heads.
Well, when i pulled the engine out for this part of the build up, I expected to crack it open, see that all is well, and reseal and paint it. Here's where it gets funny. I took off the valve covers, and was lookin at the lack of sludge... then popped the intake off,a nd was looking at like maybe 2 specks of sludge. Didn't even notice the kerfaggled pushrods... Uh oh. So I log onto this real cool site for assistance *linky* looks good huh? it gets worse... sitting for 6 to 8 weeks in a nice dry truck bed ... of your only running vehicle... isn't a good idea. (duh) I had a carb lift plate on it, I had duct tape on the ports... blah blah blah. it wasn't enough. This was the worst one... Last edited by Longhorn Man; 08-16-2008 at 04:25 PM. |

Rivited... I can't say yet.
I have a moving blanket over the seat for now. The front seatbelts still need to come out again and get cleaned. I'm thinking of some kick ass degreaser i have (spraynine) and a steam cleaner... but even they may not do the trick. We'll see what happens. I'm pretty good at keeping my seats and stuff clean. I was able to clean it up pretty good. Yeah, there was a tick of pitting... but everyone who saw it said not to worry about it. It's just a cruiser.
As far as the 8 bent exhaust pushrods, everyone I spoke to agreed with billla. It was probably just exhaust valves adjusted too tight when it was rebuilt. I was just shocked that it ran as good as it did. Always hit on all 8, run it up close to 100 MPH, hauled cross country... sure, it was a dog, and would only spin the tires for about 2 feet outta the hole... but still, it ran GOOD for having a choked exhaust. What ever. So, I slapped a new cam in it, there were a couple lobes missing due to the bent pushrods, plus the cam got wet and rusty too. Inspected the mains, they looked awesome, cleaned and painted everything up and came up with this sexy beast; This was about the time I fired it up and broke in the cam. That was a fun treat. I LINK therefor I am. So after pulling the dist out, and putting it in right, then tracking down why I was getting no oil pressure (clogged line on the guage) it fired up and ran pretty good while we run the cam. After some tuning and stuff, it runs great. This is how it looks today. I have the harness cleaned up, and all parts verified working. I'll do the split loom harness cover stuff once the front clip is all bolted in. I was somewhat shocked to learn that the A/C compressor kicks on with no noise or drama. Once I fill the system, i might just have working A/C. That'd be cooler than sh!t. The valve covers are supposedly stock ones off an early b.b chevelle ss... 67 I think is what he told me. (they were free to me) The air cleaner assembly was on a buddy's truck (fugly square body with more rust than metal) and when it caught fire, he said i could have it. It WAS annodised blue alluminum, but that was all messed up, so i sand blasted it to bare alluminum, then painted it with some cast iron gray colored spray paint. It looked OK... then, I shot clear overr it, and it looks sweet IMO. HEI is a Skip White piece (as seen on e-bay) and I highly recomend it. Granted, I've ran it less than a year, but so far so good. I did however have to replace the vac advance can... but I prefer the adjustabel accell piece anyways. The plug wires and the wire holders/loom unit are both from Moroso, picked up locally at jegs (along with the accell cav adv can) I got small allen head bolts for the valve cover hold down bolts... i wanna do the intake with them too, but that'll happen later... maybe. I just think they look better. You can see I tried running everything with the lack of clutter in my mind. I removed all the wires that weren't needed anymore after removing a few things, then I put the remaining wires in split loom and tried to run it somewhat out of the way. Not so much going out of my way to hide it, just trying to make it all neat. Once the fenderwell goes in, I'll see if I can run that heaterr hose under the compressor and out of sight... an that whole area will be a concern to me. if you look at the first engine shots up there, it looks just way too messy on that side. We'll see what happens. |
