Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Dude Where ya been I thought one of your projects ate you !!! Good to hear your helping with Dad's truck . I'm waiting for 1 rocker stud from ARP cause I had one that was bad !! Great people and products sending me a new no questions . Happy except for the wait supposed to be here Monday then I will finish it up . Hope you guys get that windshield in . I think I will have someone change mine for me when the time comes . I don't need that kind of mental frustration !!! Good Luck !! Bob

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Dude, its worth it to have one installed
And especially if they have a "we break it, we buy it" policy

We had the one in my yellow truck installed & I helped (friend of our s that does windshields) & I dont remember having any of the problems we are having

When we get back out to the shop & work on it some more, we are prolly gonna try it one more time like it is (all but the bottom is in) & if that doesnt work we are gonna pull it out & measure to make sure the glass isnt the wrong size (made in China)

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

You know some things just have to be a problem. Even with a professional and both Matt and I helping, it took 2 tries and 2 hours to install this windshield.
Looks good tho. Just a few more things and I can start putting some miles on it.
The engine is still idling rough and is not smooth at 2k.
Gonna try going thru the carb and putting a HEI in it.
Not sure the rings have freed up from sitting so long, so maybe a little more driving will help.

That's why at my shop we have a strict no-self-installed window policy!!! If our glass guy breaks it, HE pays for it!!!

I had the last one installed professionally, but had the extra time with this one. Sometimes DIY is not the cheapest. But we can at least learn from our mistakes.

Hoping to get some time on this project today.
If I get the carb and HEI changed, I need to weld up a rear shock mount and a few other little things.

I would really like to get it on the road for a few miles before I take it to the board meet in TN. Looks like I will be leaving for work in another week or so, so time is running out.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Got a little done. This first picture is the passenger sides rear lower shock mount.

This is what the drivers side looked like.

Tried taking the axle bolt retainer/shock mount off, but it wasn't coming. This is a beater project, so I really didn't want to replace the axle u bolts. so I welder a washer and volt onto the old shock mount. Wish I had taken a pic before I put the new shock on, but....

Anyway, I also changed out the carb for the one on another ride we have. It also had been rebuilt only a few miles back, but several years ago. It didn't work too good either, so i tore it apart. Major gunk in the bowl and the rubber on the acc. pump was toast. Lucked out and O'reilley's had a kit for $7.99. That fixed the carb, but still had a miss. Turned out numbers 1 and 6 were not firing.
Changed the wires out with others, tried different plugs, but still a dead miss on 1 and 6. No fire going thru the wires????
So i installed a HEI out of another truck.
SMOOTH as SILK.
No pics, but you know what they look like. Only thing difficult was re-shaping the fuel line to clear the HEI and run over to the carb side othe engine. Came out well, but would have been alot easier if I had done that before I put the HEI in.
Still have to finish wiring the HEI, just used a jumper to try it out. This truck still had a dropping resistor wire, so I cut it out and replaced it with some 12 ga. wire and still need a special spade connector to go in the firewall block.
Well its getting closer to being a driver.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Well we have a lil bad news about RBT

It had a small coolant leak from the thermostat housing, so we pulled it off & in HORROR & SHOCK we saw old nasty engine oil !!!!!

So we drained it & flushed it out some, but we are still unsure if there is a block problem or is it sabotage

Just tuned in to this thread, I like the idea of keeping it crusty, just make it nice inside to drive. To bad about the oil in the coolant.

What part of Texas are yall in?

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Well, seems like it really is leaking oil into the water.
This was suppose to be a cheap, get it running and drive it build. I have tried hard to to keep from doing the little things that lead to the bigger things and stay focused on getting it dependable.
This may change things a little.
The cab is too rusty to make nice unless I go all the way. Doesn't seem like there is any place to quit on this Seems like a shame for as decent as most everything is on this truck. If I do want to make a really nice truck, I have a better one to start with.
Ramble,,, Ramble,,,, Ramble,,,,
I may just put another six in it and roll on, we'll see.

Well since I was ordering some stuff for my truck, dad decided to have me get him some rockers too

But nothing has really been going on with it, we just move it around & move trailers with it right now

We are kinda waiting on a title
