Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
Nothing picture worthy, but I finally hooked up my emergency brake. I'm just glad to have that done. I just used one side, drivers side. I don't think that I have enough room for both sides, the drive shaft would be in the way. That's it, nothing big just been a while since I've done anything so I wanted to post.

Progress! With times being tough and money being tight I haven't had much to do, but the past few day I've been working on a gas pedal. Nothing fancy, but it should work. I didn't take any during pix, but here are the after, installed, pix.

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
I want to get started on wiring my truck so I want to the pull-a-part today and asked for their newest car. It was in the front row, so about 10 min later I had my almost new fuse box for only $6. It has all the relays and mini fuses in it, I just need to rewire it.

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
It's been a while since I've done anything to my '51, but I have a good reason. Around a month ago I got a new old truck, a '71 Chevy 4x4. I have a good reason, I'm going to sell my '88 to get rid of a payment. I know I shouldn't have a payment on an '88 but I do and I want to get rid of it.
I'm hoping this year coming I will have my '51 running and driving around. Until then I will be driving this:

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
That is a bad 71'...i love those chevy trucks...my grandad had one like it at one time...it was a green and white two tone....cool old truck with a 3 on a tree column shifter...it was almost my first truck until it got sold to help out with money needs....but i got to see it redone by another man so it was bittersweet

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
Thanks. I am finding more small things as time goes on, but I like it. I'm driving it everyday back and forth to school. Hasn't let me down yet, though it's only been a few days. I've got to clean out my '88 now; I'm selling it to a friend at the beginning of next month.
That sucks about not getting your truck. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes.

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
As of now I do not have any kind of bushing there, but I will get a 1/4" piece of rubber to put between the mount and cab before I'm finished and driving it.

Check out this build. I think its where everyone else got the idea for using the rear s10 cab mount up front for the AD cab. There is good information on there also.

Yep, that's Clark's post. He has a great truck and has driven the heck out of it.
I used a standard S10 puck on my mount and it feels pretty good. Our mount was 4" high and added the 1" puck to get to 5" total. I used the stock shackles on the rear and bought a new mount kit for like $14 from Bill Wales Truck Parts to improve the rubber. |

Hey Nick, did you ever find the interior windshield piece that mounts behind the rear view? I have an extra one if you need it. I don't know where it's at. But, if you need it, I'll put it aside once it's found and send it to you.

I think that I'll be getting some from a local guy up here in May, but I will be interested if he doesn't have the right ones. So keep me in mind. Thanks Sgt.

Nick, I dont believe i have commented on how well your project is turning out. It looks like it will be a blast to drive. I like the stance without having to drop you ride height. It should cause for a better ride. Is your 4wd rear end disc or drum.. I think I can see drums in your picture. I found me a 4wd blazer rear with disc breaks for 100 bones. I think I will have to change proportioning valve with this setup though.

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
Thanks for the kind words. My rear is a drum brake set up. I guess if I want to I can always find a disk rear for it, but for now it works.
That's a good deal for your rear, and you will need to get a disk/disk prop valve; unless your s10 came with that setup. For me to have it finished I think that I'm looking at about $1000 for all the parts a other random crap I need to get for it. It's not a lot; glass, plumbing, electrical, drive shaft, and finish putting the clutch in, and I'll be golden.

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
Nick, how's the new rear end affecting your bed? I put a 4x4 rear in Court's '54 but the L series tires still rubbed. I put 2" spacers all the way around but would like to get rid of them.
The bed set up on the '54 is different, the truck I'm working on now is a '51 so I'd like to see what I'm in for. I love me some wide WWW. Last edited by Dan Bowles; 02-16-2010 at 09:10 AM. |

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
I am rubbing a bit with the 4x4 rear and no spacers. I'm going to get some 1"-2" spacers when money allows for that truck. The bed it 50" wide. Shouldn't the '54 be the same?

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
I have a 4wd rear axle in mine with 1" spacers to keep it from rubbing with no tubs in the bed. Wheels are stock 95 s10 15x7's. I think a ZR2 rear axle, 63" wide, would be perfect for no spacers.

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
Robert, the guy behind AD-Engineering says the ZR-2 rear is too wide, but at 6 inches I'd expect it to be just right. The Chevelle rear I have under my stock framed '55 1st Suburban is 62 inches and fits about right.
I expect to have an S-10 4x4 rear by the end of the week and will do some measuring of my own with that. I plan to use it under a '54 GMC I'm building. One thought I've had is using the inner fender/inner panels from a Suburban or panel body to tub a pickup bed. Has anyone else tried that? Got any pictures of how it worked out? |

Here's a stock 4wd s10 rear axle (60" wide), with 15x7 3.75" bs wheels and 235/75R15 tires:
At rest, and at this ride height they cleared by 1/8". With any load in the bed or hitting a bump, they would have rubbed so I did 1" spacers to fix that. Before I decided that I needed to be able to haul plywood, I had mini-tubs from the s10 bed: Now, they're gone:

Re: everyone is doing it so i am to........s10 swap on a 51
The '54 bed is 2" deeper so I couldn't even put the bed on. Same width at 50" but i really hit the sidewall hard. I don't remember the back spacing on the rims. I doubt I ever measured them. I've heard the ZR2 is 2" wider but not sure. I actually would rather get that rear end in the future or go for a Camaro rear. 60" isn't wide enough no matter how you slice it!
