Re: Whats your favorite SB chevy motor and why??
I've recently gotten into the dirt track circle of people (pun intended)...and MOST of them want 400 blocks to build as "350's"...yes its cheating but thats what they do. Thats one reason 400 blocks are so rare, around here anyway. Most everybody runs a SBC 350 since its the biggest they can legally get away with, they appear to be somewhat bullet proof, and easy to get parts for. I run an OLDS 350, everyone said it wouldn't last but after 2 seasons its still REALLY strong. SO, I'd say 350's are probably the favorite mainly because of availablity, availability of parts, and everyone knows how to work on them...but I'm a non-conformist so I'm voting 307 and 327.

My favorite would also have to be 70.5 Z-28 360hp/350 ci LT-1 . But for a current build it would be 87-98 Tbi or vortec block .

they are all small blocks, -- pop the hood and a lot of us can't tell one from another (except for the 307 -- the tiny little balancer thingy it has is a dead giveaway)

Re: Whats your favorite SB chevy motor and why??
I guess I'm a little different than most on here, and love the new technology in the new genIII/IV engines. I mean come on, an LS7: 427 cubic inches, 505HP, dry sump oiling, and still gets good gas mileage! Now that's a spendy unit, but awesome.
I also like the LS1/LS6 engines as well as the 5.3L and 6.0L. I'm torn between slapping a supercharger on my 5.3L and calling it a day, or building up the LS6 block I have on a stand. If I had to pick an old school SBC, I guess it'd have to be a 327....had one of those in my 72 GMC for many years. Learned a lot working and re-building it. |
