Any Pics or Detail on how you are Doing the Rear Door? Are you leaving extra Material on the Cut to Fold over to make the Seam along front edge?

There wasn't really anything to take pictures of yet. Right now I'm figuing out where to cut the inside of the door. Once thats worked out I'll post pics. As for the door skin, I left it an inch to fold over just like stock. Wouldn't you know that corner of the lower doorskin was fine, but the lower rear corner is rusted and needs patched next.

You work like I do; plan as much as you can in theory but figure it out as you go in reality. Otherwise you will never start! Looks like it's doable to me. I need to check this thing out. When does the burb roof arrive?

Funny thing is I'm an Engineer, you'd think I would be anal about designing it all before I cut the first piece. LOL
That's it though, lay it out in CAD, measure things a bit, then snap a chalk line, and start cuttin. I think better on my feet. The last couple of days I have realized that even the second go at my front doors isn't right. The rear post on the door curves in to the top when looking from the rear, and I think it curved a bit when you look down from the roof too. The front post though is flat and straight like a... well never mind. But I do have a spair pair from the donor doors that I cut for extra top material, so in the end I think the front doors will have two 'A' posts. I'm sitting in a motel in South Carolina right now, the inlaws are coming to visit for the weekend, two buddies need parts for their cars (one is a shifter for an old Brabham F3 car, and the other needs parts for his dirt latemodel). So it might be a few days until I get back on track.

Oh, yea the burb roof is supposed to show up this weekend... After looking at one in the wrecking yard a couple weeks ago, I'm not sure how usefull it will be. The drip rails seem to be formed differently, and I hadn't noticed before but there is now inner roof panel. I think I can form up a long piece of new drip rail, but I'll probably have to use some of the new roof for the inner roof too.

(and I'm starting to get distracted by the corvair in the driveway... picked up some urethane bushings for the front suspension, and some rod ends for the rear.... then there is the racing season just around the corner)

The burb roof is 2 piece, I believe. The assembly manual for 60-66 shows it fairly well. Im not sure where the division is, exactly.

The one I looked at in the wrecking yard had runners inside for attaching a soft headliner, but no metal one. It might have been a GMC that I was looking at if that makes any difference... now I gotta go look at pictures.

Did you autocross that Corvair out at PIR with the Porsche Club? If so I saw your car at one event when I was running my 69 Burb. ...this year I'll be piloting this.

All Burb/ Panel, Chevy/GMC roofs are the same as that. If it were me, I'd just do an upholstered roof in the crewcab utilizing the Burb style roof. Just my .02

my idea for using a sub roof on a crew build, is to cut the windshield posts of the pickup cab, and splicing in the whole sub roof, connecting it across the top rear of the cab in the driprail.
my reasoning for thid, is that the sub would have a consistent drip rail running front to back on the sides.
the problem with putting 2 truck cabs together front to back, is that the windshield area is quite a bit narrower than the rear of the cab, and the driprail runs out at a steeper angle than the sub....

My thoughts on using a Burb were along the same lines, but using mostly Burb....roof, firewall, and front floorpan. Then adding a pickup rear cab panel and floor, and going from there. Sorry for the hijack 66Z71

No problem. I can use all the suggestions you guys have. Thats why I started this thread when I started the project. This is all new territory for me.

I'm making progress... or at least making a metal shavings. I've spent the last several days trying to figure out the center post for the doors. I think I finally see why all the other crew cabs have a visable body post between the windows. There just ain't enough room inside the front edge of the door to get the window down there. There is a brace in the first 3 inches of the door. I really like the clean lines of a narrow B pillar, so I might sacrifice roll down rear windows for the 'look'. Since the kids are the ones that sit back there and they don't have a vote

On another note, I got the Suburban roof Saturday. It looks every bit as good as I had hoped. Don't know if I'm lucky or not though. I posted an ad on Craigslist back when I started this looking for a roof, and the very next morning I get a reply from a guy 300 miles away that he has one. Turned out he needed to pick up a door from a guy just a few miles from me, so he brought me the roof, no charge. Well, talking to him Saturday I mention that the only thing left to find is a big back window cab panel. Well, you can see where this is going, he has one sitting in his back yard, and coulda thrown it on the trailer too if he had known I needed it. DOH !!!



Here are a few other pics of parts that will eventually find their way onto the truck if it should ever get done.

I should be able to find enough good parts in there to build a tranny & transfer case.


Street Wheels, wife picked them up for $100. gotta keep the wife involved
In looking for the ideal street/offroad tire it seems the only real solution is a pair of each. The good offroad tires are noise, and wear out quickly on the street, and smooth riding street tires don't go far offroad. So I'll pick up a pair of cheap steel wheels for the offroad tires, and use these for some nice all terains.


On Board Air, so I can air down the tires when were off road, and refill the air tank in the trailer while were on our way to the track.. gotta love that.


Hydraboost, I have it on my '94 Suburban, and it has saved my bacon a time or two when getting cut off while towing a big trailer.


Rear disk brake brackets, and front spring hangers from DIY4X. Not the cheapest, but a reasonable compromise between $$ and quality.


Anyways work is slow, so I'm gonna take a couple days off this week and stay home and play in the shop. Hopefully by next weekend there will be plenty to show.

how did you do the rear door hinge/pillar, and do the dors interfere with each other when opening?
