Wing or vent window rebuild

Exactly; that upper pivot is what I'm referring to. Is it better to remove the 'pivot' rivet or the two the retain the pivot bracket?

I didn't try removing the 2 rivets. So I can't speak from experience on that. Do you have a spare to try it on? I looked for my other vent window frame I had to put together and can't find it anywhere. It will pop up someday LOL

I have not tried anything. I was trying to determine which would be the better/easier route before doing something regrettable.

Looks like that one is the easiest to access as well. Where can a guy find those 'pivot' rivets? They don't look like a standard rivet....

The rivet is a stepped rivet. I know Tim Christian has sold his business. You might PM him he might help you out. he helped me out when I needed another

i ended up just using aluminum pop rivets too, 100X easier, looks just as good, can do w/out help, BUT is not original like CHEVY FLEETSIDE said.

I just taped off the striker plate when i primed/painted the frame.

really makes a world of difference in sealing up the vent windows.

It's been a year since I did them. Let's see if I can recall.

Because if I remember right the soft rubber around the hoop tucks in behind the rigid verticle piece that has the 4 rivets. It was very difficult to tuck the weatherstrip in with the verticle piece riveted. Basicaly get everything in place before the rivets go in. Hope this clears it up.

I bought my weatherstrip kit from truckandcarshop.com. The special rivits for the weatherstrip are too short for the weatherstrip that they sell. I used regular pop rivits and weatherstrip adhesive for the one I could not get to. After reading here about how much trouble they are to replace, I did not replace my pivot stepped rivit.

BTW most of the stuff I bought from truckandcarshop.com has been fine. The original style firewall pad was real hard to install even with 2 people. The door to cab weatherstrip has been on B/O for a month. They said it should be in any day.

They can be fabicated out of steel or aluminum. These are cast. They use a 1/2IN Fine thread bolt drilled out and you press fit the two dies in. Pretty simple. We sell the revits and all from 1 to 50 per box.

Thank you for posting this (how too) on wing or vent window rebuild, I found it a benefit in rebuilding my 67-72 vent window.

I think it should be moved or copied into the FAQ/how too section of this forum for the benefits of all the forum members regardless what year truck their working on.

Great write up Allen!! I am going to tackle my vent windows tomorrow this thread makes me much more confident.

The second one is always easier. The first time I installed the rigid strip first. That for me was a no-no. The wrap around goes in first as seen below.

Parts laid out on a padded work bench.



With some lube for it to squeeze into the channel I installed the wrap around piece first.



The rigid piece needs to be bowed a little to get it in the corner pockets.



The wrap around didn't fit as well as the first one. It seemed a little short on both ends.





I pulled it back out of the track some to fix the end gaps by shifting it. I trimmed about 1/8" off because it binding on the pivot bracket. It really didn't help much it was just too short.



With everything in and lined up it's ready for the rivets.

Insert the glass frame in place while installing the washers that you made note of their position earlier. I oiled the washers and anything that moves just in case.



These two pics show the stop washer in place.





I then inserted an awl in the pivot rivet hole and made sure the window opens and closes like it should. Then installed the rest of the washers, spring, nut and lock. I tightened the spring until the felt right. You don't want it flopping going down the road with it open. I used the "TLAR" method. That means "That Looks About Right"

Once your satisfied with the operation install the pivot rivot and handle.

This is the finished product minus the glass.

Does it matter or is it easier to install the glass into it's frame before or after installing the glass frame into the vent window assembly? Alan's pictures show the completed assembly without the glass so I assume he put it in after. I have heard thought that installing the glass into it's frame may require force to seat it properly which I think may be better to do before. Any opinions?

I doubt it since the vent window assembly is not a structural part of the door.
