Re: Suspend "Cash For Clunkers"?

A buddy of mine went the other day and traded in his '85. 4-door Cadillac Deville and bought a '09 Mitsubishi Lancer. He's excited about it but I'm not so sure that he's realized that he has to make that payment each month. And he's working at a job that only lets him work about 2 days a month for a few hours. I've worked before and have a good bit of experience in different trades, etc. and I still haven't even been able to find a job. That car had a stock 350 that could easily spin the tires and everything was in great shape including perfect red leather seats and a fresh new red metallic paint job. I just hope it works out for him and that it's worth it for all of the people that have taken advantage of the program.

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA - the folks that publish "the books" on used car prices) doesn't seem to think this is going as good as some would have you believe.
I read that entire article. All they are advising is that dealer should wait and see if more $ is allocated to a wildly succesful program.
Where did I miss the part about the program not "going as good as some would have you believe"?

so how the heck did he get a loan? I'm pretty surprised on this one... someone mentioned all the repos that may be coming soon, but how the heck is someone getting a car loan and only works a few days a month??

Re: Suspend "Cash For Clunkers"?

last I heard, 47% of the vehicles bought from the CFC (Cash for clunkers) program were US made... but that does not mean they were all big 3... but that also means 53% of them were not US based companies or vehicles...

You would think that if they wanted to get X amount of cars sold in a given time, then they would have been a bit more prepared to sell X amount of cars in a given time.

I feel it supports my original point that bureaucrats have no business managing ANYTHING, much less something as important as mine and YOUR health care.

I'd say mind-boggling indeed.

I read it again.NADA says wait for more $. How is this some big negative news?

I quit coffee 3 weeks ago so I'm nearly brain-dead. Could you highlight the part that suggests this program is not going well etc.

Quote:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Despite the Obama administration's promises that any Clunker deals written this weekend would be honored, the National Automobile Dealers Association is advising its members to play it safe and not close any more deals until the program's fate is clearer.

"Regarding auto sales this weekend, one possible alternative is for dealers to take deposits in lieu of consummated sales with an eye toward legislative success next week," NADA spokesman Charles Cyrill wrote in an e-mail.

The House of Representatives allocated $2 billion more on Friday to continue the program after it apparently burned through its original $1 billion budget in the week since its official July 24 start date. The measure faces opposition in the Senate, however.

"We could have a legislative conclusion very quickly with the promise of more money for the program," Cyrill said later by telephone. Until that's settled, he said, the dealers' organization is recommending that dealers proceed with caution.

Since the rules of the program require dealers to render traded-in vehicles permanently inoperable before applying for their rebates, dealers whose applications are not honored could be left with no money and no vehicle to sell.

Under the plan as enacted, vehicles purchased after July 1 will be eligible for refund vouchers worth $3,500 to $4,500 on traded-in gas guzzlers. The trade-in vehicle has to get a combined city and highway fuel economy rating of 18 miles per gallon or less.

The program aims to help the struggling auto industry by taking inefficient cars off the road and spurring new sales.
I got that it went faster than planned and I agree that it would be wise for the dealers to wait. Ideally they should have expected this and had in place the personnel to handle the avalanche.
Typical bureaucratic bungling i guess, and I see your point but still being too successful is not all bad.

It does say, though, that the the foreign vehicles are manufactured here in the U.S. Also, I can't say as I blame a lot of folks for buying "foreign" vehicles given some of the crap that the Big 3 have put out.

DING DING DING DING DING!!!

this is EXACTLY how i feel. how did we get in such bad shape? people taking out loans on houses that they could not afford... so, what do we do... lets convince people to take out loans on cars they cant afford!!! wow great idea there.....

we had a PERFECT 92 K1500 come in today that i worked on. ive been looking for a 88-94 for about 2 years (i'm picky), so i asked the guy about selling it. he said well, i had thought about trading it in on that clunkers thing but i couldnt find a truck i liked... this 92 truck has 118,000 miles on it to the dot when i pulled it in. i asked if he knew that if he traded it in, it would be crushed.. he was dumbfounded, he couldnt stand the thought of the truck being crushed, as he bought it brand new.

Re: Suspend "Cash For Clunkers"?

Exactly. There's nothing "green" about it at all. I love how most of the top 10 trade in's are Fords. If I were to have a nice stable job that I made good money at I might would consider taking advantage of it. The only way I would have done so were if I were to have gotten a Dodge Diesel. That's about the only possible way that I would have considered even trading in my '94 Blazer. But it's a great truck, it runs great, and it's paid off so I can handle it's fuel mileage. Because in my eyes, that's the most "green" option that will be happening for quite a while.
