Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
OOOOHHH ZAP-----POW---HEAD BANG----OOOOWWWW----CRAP---- DARN IT
Dang plug wires. another way is to start it and listen, then turn it off and pull a plug wire, then start it again---if it is worse, then shut it off an pull another. OR put all of the plug wires on just down to the clip for the plug tip and use a plastic puller to lift them off one at a time. I use an old fuse puller form my electrical days---no shock.

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
that explains why the air filter element is melted.. is this caused by the miss? and the fumes and gas cloud coming out the exhaust?

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
It looks to me like the wrong timing tab also. Looks like a 305 tab and they are 12 degrees different from a 350 if I am not mistaken.
I would double check to make sure plugwires are plug into correct places. Did you use a steel shim intake gasket? Aluminum manifolds require the felpro gasket (or others makes) without the steel shim because the low torque (25# or so) of the bolts (on aluminum intakes) is not sufficient to compress the gasket properly. |

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
oh **** harder to start then before isnt good at all. This is usually timing. Okay your engine is a 350 correct? Does it have a cam in it or just stock?

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
Why is everyone saying its the timing tab? Looks like a wide 305 balancer with the stock 12oclock timing tab. Now its harder to start with the new timing tab.

but the fel-pro printoseal http://www.summitracing.com/parts.aspx?sku=FPP-1256 is whats needed for the aluminum intake. I don't know that this will solve your problem but if intake is not sealing properly could have vacuum leaks and more. |

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
try firing her up at night, pop the hood, and turn off all the lights around you, and watch for arching at the wires. visually trace each wire and you could try moving them around with a wooden stick or rubber handled long tool.
also check to see that your carburator is for that intake that you have, i know that square bore carbs and the spread bore carbs act different and you need adapters when puttin a square bore in a spread bore and vice-versa. |

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
And yea I have tried to time it with both timing tabs and they both run like s**t.. Is my harmonic ballancer shot? Because at a high rpm I do feel a vibration.

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
OK you just need to narrow it down. If you only replaced the manifold and it ran good before then it has to be the distributor/timing and if it is off that could cause it to overheat also.
Are you sure you have a 350 motor? Look up the numbers on engine pad on mortec's website. http://mortec.com/ The balancer looks like a 305 balancer along with the tab. Take out #1 plug and turn engine over til you feel compression, then turn crank manually until the timing mark reads TDC then see if distributor lines up on #1 terminal on dist. cap, if not restab the dist. |

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
If it were mine I would swap the 305 balancer for a 350 balancer I used one of these on mine http://www.summitracing.com/parts.aspx?sku=PIO-872002
Here is an 8" also http://www.summitracing.com/parts.aspx?sku=PIO-DA-3502 So just changing the tabs w/o changing 305 balancer will still give you wrong readings because that balancer marks are 12 degrees off from a 350 balancer (I measure the difference when I replaced my 305 with a crate 350) Last edited by HOGDADDY; 03-12-2010 at 05:15 PM. |

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
Ok, so u said it missfires under load, is it undee throtle at all times or just at certain rpm? Can u post up a picture of your install? That way we can see wat it looks like and maybe catch the problem. Could probly just be a crossed vaccum or something simple. Did u use any spacers? Was there any parts that u didnt use on your new intake that were on your old intake? have u pulled the plugs yet to check wich one is causing the problem? Double check your dist cap, pull it off and look into it, also, when did u get the new wires? After the install? B4? Or during?

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
well right now i have everything together to put a 262/272 summit cam in it. i bough the those fel-pro 1205 gaskets you were talking about. im going to match them to the heads, i noticed that they dont have the center hole in them like stock replacements do.. emissions i think?? what affect will that have on the motor by blocking those off? so hopefully when i yank everything apart and back together again i realize what i did wrong the first time around, and fix it. does anyone have any experiance with this cam. its pretty mild right? will ihave a lumpy idle at all? what kind of hp / mpg gains will i notice?

Re: New Parts, New PROBLEMS!!!
datguysaL, i got the wires about a week before the install. before, i had a single plane with a 2 inch 4 hole spacer on it that will probably be going back on soon. i dont think i have a vacuum line crossed. all i have is my vac advance and my trans, and heater controls. then brake boost on the carb and pcv.. i put a new cap and rotor and coil on it and it helped nothing. i pulled all the plugs and they all looked the same.. real clean and dry.. i think i have a vacuum leak on my intake gasket cuz i used a steel core gasket.. i hope.. i guess ill find out when the cam goes in

If you don't make a hole for heat crossover it will make one all on its own eventually shouldn't hurt anything at all though. I would get it running right before I put a new cam in jmho. Last edited by HOGDADDY; 03-13-2010 at 01:30 PM. |
