If you have the tools, and a place to do it, I think I would avoid the rattle cans. You'll get a nicer, more even looking paint job if you use basecoat / clearcoat. There are clears out there for this purpose with semigloss or flat sheen.

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
My paint came from here..............
http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ksflatz.aspx It's basically a single stage paint with a flattening agent mixed in. The truck was painted over a year ago, no issues what so ever. Rattle can? Don't do it. Every speck of the rattle can paint will need to be removed down the road when you decide to go with real paint. Lots of work and you'll wish you'd never seen a rattle can. LOL. Ask me how I know.

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
I am definitely sold on this. It shows a gallon for $169 with everything i need. I just have to find out how to set the air compressor and paint gun to produce a nice finish without wasting time and product. Thank you for all your information. My son has a '77 stepside and I have a '71 C10 lwb and both need paint. This will definitely help!!!!!

Mine was shot in a top of the line booth and baked. The finish came out clean and shows no "orange peel". Good Luck and I think you'll be happy with the satin look.

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
Forgot to add............
After I shot my jambs, inner fenders, under the hood, and the truck, I ended up using 2 gallon kits and a quart kit. I have roughly a quart and a half left over.

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
Mine did, but every vehicle can be different. Every product/brand covers different. I didn't want to run out and have to wait for another shipment to arrive.

If i do not have any access to a clean booth....are there any alternatives? I have a warehouse that i can hang clean drop cloths to make a "secured" paint area. Maybe wet the floor, and put a couple fans to suck out the air. |

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
The link I provided has a couple links on the top of the page for "Support" and "Forum", I'd start there and see what type of response you get.
There are a lot of really nice paint jobs out in the world that were shot in a single car garage or outside. I guarantee you many hours were spent sanding and buffing to get the desired finish. My experience with "Flattened" paint is that you can't sand and buff to enhance the finish.

Here's mine, SPI epoxy primer sprayed with a cheapy harbor freight gun in my garage. It's not perfect, but good enough for my daily driver!

Speaking of SPI........Their products are some of the best if not the best out there and you don't need to mortgage the farm to buy them. I've had the pleasure of corresponding with the owner, and have a friend that is a distributor. My S-10 is all SPI, Viper Red base and Universal Clear. My '73 has SPI Orange on the wheels and interior. All were shot with a Harbor Freight gun. I heard a rumor a couple weeks ago that Barry (owner) may be mixing up colors again, I'm praying. But, as Barry will tell you, his epoxy primer has no UV protection as it's not intended as a top coat. The lack of UV protection will have it turning gray/white pretty soon. With the epoxy however, you're only a scuff or two away from shooting it again. Either way, your truck looks awesome!

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
I hear John Deere Blitz Black holds up good. Its made for painting tractors so it should be tough. Ive painted motorcycles, helmets, lawnmowers, and a few other things with it. Google it and you should find lots of examples. I just picked up this 85 sierra and im pretty sure its painted with blitz black. Havent been home to see it yet, im still on tour in Afghanistan. When i start modifying the body some more ill be sure to use blitz black everywhere, inside and out. Going for all black and a few touches of chrome, very minimal chrome though, im not into polishing. I dont want to clean it i want to drive the guts out of it.

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
Do you have any interior pics? Right now mine is burgundy or red, some thing like that but it has to go for all black.
When you switched to the older style mirrors, did they bolt right up using the top holes? Where you left with a third hole in the door to fill. Id pull the mirror off and look but its a long walk out to the truck since my driveway is a 18 hour flight from here. Take my advice, dont ever come to Afghanistan. |

Re: Pictures of flat/satin paint jobs
Not to sound like a broken record, but where do I find info on how to set an air compressor (pressure) settings so that I can paint? Every sight talks about mixtures, sand, prep, etc.....i cant find anything that talks about paint guns and compressors. I bought set of HVLP guns and NO instructions came with them. I have an old Craftsman paint gun from when I was in high school(20+yrsago) but cant remember anything about how to set up the system....
