oh yes, I've got a 10 pack of brand new AAs, and a completely empty 4 gig SD card ready to go.

Well, the show was great and my wife and I had a blast! Unfortunately there was a severe lack of 1960 through 1966 Chevy trucks there, I think I may have only taken pics of 5 or 6 trucks. There were a lot of earlier trucks and a handful of the 67-72, just not too many of ours. We got to the swap meet quite a bit later than I had wanted to, so a lot of the venders had packed up and left. I did manage to get a hold of an original sales brochure and owner's manual for the 65 C-10 though, and my wife found some cool vintage stuff for our house and shop, so we still left pretty happy. I am working on some pictures, but my usualy method of getting pics from my cell to the computer just got f'ed up because my email company did an "update" and now all I get is a tiny thumbnail. Once I find a new way to transfer these pictures, and get the camera back from my wife I will have some pics to share.

I just realized I completely forgot the pics I promised... I'll try to get them posted when I'm home Sunday night.

We finally got a name for this build: project "Junkyard Dog".

Went to the junkyard yesterday. Managed to pick up a set of sway bars: mid 80's 1 ton Chevy p/u front, and Iroc rear. Got both for just a touch over $50, not too shabby.

I also managed to get the bench seat out. These things are a real b**** when workin alone. Surprisingly this one isn't in too bad of shape, a new cover and she ought to be good to go.

Time for an update: Got to spend a good amount of time this passed weekend working on tearing down the donor truck. I managed to get all of the front sheet metal removed, and the motor pulled. Man this truck in greezy, looked like the PO forgot to tighten the oil filter so pretty much everything was soaked in oil and grime. Here is some shots of the weekends work.

So it wasn't until I had the motor there hangin in the air that I realized that all of my engine stand bolts were being used by the other 3 engines sitting on stands. Oops, oh well. Stopped by the hardware store on my way to work tonight and grabbed another set, it'll give me something to do tomorrow.


The pile of pulled parts. All of it found its way to the scrap yard, it was really too rusty to make it worth trying to sell or even give away for other's projects. Made a few bucks.


Everything all buttoned up and closed down for the night. This is how it is all sitting now.


Not much going on with the Junkyard Dog herself, but as soon as I can get this donor all stripped down and gone I'll have tons of work to do.

Anyone have any suggestions for getting all this oil, grease, and grime off the engine so I can paint it? I'm trying to avoid rebuilding the engine so my usual method of disassemble, cook in an oven, and run through the airless media blaster won't do.

I have found Eazy-Off oven cleaner works well at degreasing. Also the Castrol Super Clean works well. Scrub brushes and if you can, warm/hot water.

Oh, make sure wherever you clean it, you don't mind a huge mess as it will be all over the floor, you and anything near it. Tape up or plastic bag any openings.

i have awsome resulets from the cheap ass walmart lemon sected oven cleaner , and let it sitt and soak in over night , and spray it off with a hose , and touch up with super clean . **** is only 89 cents a can and will make every thing smell good . making mad progress so when you are ready to hauel the donor pig out let me know unless you wanna cut it up and hauel in the pices your self bro . have tooken 64 for a few runs around the block and let me tell you , 454 + light 64 c10 + a tight LSD or locker and smaller tires = one hell of a ride and big ****ing smile . it will plant my 195 pound ass deep in a bench seat bro get to reno and i will take you for a ride . dam i am mc loving it .

Hey Fryer...I second the cheapo oven cleaner. I used a bunch when I picked up my 454 and it worked well. You will still need to scrub and do multiple passes with a pressure washer.

There is a greenish colored degreaser that I bought from Harbor Freight (sorry don't know the name) in a gallon jug. I was very surprised how well it worked. I diluted a bunch in a bucket of water and cleaned some heads real nice with just a parts cleaning brush.

Awesome guys, thanks for the suggestions. I can't find any more Castrol Super Clean in my town (and it's gonna be a little bit before I go back to Reno, I really hate California sometimes), so I'm gonna give the oven cleaner a try. Unfortunately a pressure washer is one tool I don't have access to just yet, so hopefully a garden hose with a pressure nozzle will work ok. I'll throw up some pics when I get it done.

Local parts stores stock 'Purple Power' and it works well, too. Maybe another off limits product for Cali?

I know what you are talking about, and we used to be able to get it. But pretty much the way Cali works is if it works, they ban it. I'll have to check it out though, I remember selling it when I worked auto parts.

lol get to work i am going to keep this at the top tell you get some more pics up slacker . i have driven mine 5-6 times and urs hasnt moved there is something wrong there lol , plus mine has sat in a field for 20 plus years .

I've got a 3 day weekend coming up this weekend, so I'll be out there again for at least another full day. Gotta get that trans dropped out of the '80, then I can continue tearing it all apart. I may also take a stab at getting the engine all de-greased as well. Kinda wish I had a flatbed to haul it through the carwash with, lol.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Life has been all kinds of upside down and backwards for me this year, and not very friendly to my automotive habits. The Camaro has sat more this year than any other in the 11 years I have owned it, including the year it was torn apart for most of. That being said, I did get a little bit of progress on the trucks over the weekend. I purchased a new transmission jack, and got the TH-350 out of the donor truck. I got quite a bit more junk pulled out of the cab, and got started trying to degrease the front end before disassembly (this thing is really disgusting). I also pushed the parts truck back outside and got the Firebird back inside where it belongs. I got a little bit of disassembly done on the '65 front end too; took the shocks and steering linkage off, and put some penetrating oil on the crossmember bolts so hopefully they come off easy when I try in the near future. No pictures though, so sorry for a boring update. But almost everyone on here has done what I am doing, and we all know what it looks like, nothing specially unique to my own build here. I've been trying to use the soak with degreaser and spray off method to avoid some of the old black hand syndrome. I bought some of that "Purple Power" stuff, so far not impressed. I may take a short drive into Reno and pick up some Castrol Super Clean and be done with it.
