Re: Project "Doom-Buggy" Early '60's Buggy...

Are you going to reinforce the outer edge of the pan at all? A friend of mine is restoring his Manx style dune buggy he and his dad built when he was in high school and he recommended I do that with my pan. Several years ago he gave me a shortened type 4 pan...it had a body but my friend wanted it because is was the same type his buggy was. IIRC he recommended using something like 1" square tubing for the perimeter.

Also, are you going to keep it a swing arm rear suspension or convert it to IRS?

Re: Project "Doom-Buggy" Early '60's Buggy...

I'll look into the reinforcement, but I really do not think it's neccesary.

Yeap, I'm keep the OG swing axle...my favorite, love the camber !!

Ya tons !!

Well, not really ... totally lagging on this one.

The other day I grinded and sanded the tunnel welds, and made some templates out of cardboard for the floor.

My plasma is at the shop, so one day I'll cut out the diamond plate and weld it in...some day.

Currently I'm trying to score a CLEAN A$$ '62 SWB .... Shhh, dont tell the wifee

YES ..... I AM BACK !!!

Finally, FINALLY got the floors welded in ... Again I used 1/8" diamond plate I had laying around at my shop. I actually gained about 2" of clearance in the rear floor board area by removing the OG pan. (rear seat foot area that hangs lower)

While my buddy diassembles, cleans, reseals and details the otherwise temporary 1500cc....I'm back on pan...

-

-

-

-
Before tossing the OG pan, I drilled out the spot welds and removed the stock seat tracks...to locate on new floors...

Thanks ... I agree too !

Killed 3 birds too ... Nicer looking, more clearance, and used up that 4'x8' that was in my shop that was a PITA to keep moving !!

Actually, It was just layed it flat and driven over ...

Next up, is front bulkhead modification to allow earlier front beam to bolt up ...

Re: Project "Doom-Buggy" Early '60's Buggy...

After having my wife help me lift the pan onto some saw horses, I started the mock-up of the early beam to the '68 pan. As you can see, the difference in tube spread from early to late....Also another shot of floor and seat tracks....

-

-

-

-

-

-

-

-
This extra bracing will also be smoothed out once tubes are closer together...

Thanks man !!

Yes, I do have quite a few projects going.

Currently, pluggin away at my shop ... Working on everyone else's projects.

The pan of the buggy just needs a few work welds on the rear plate, and the tubes tack in place....

The nose still need to be modified as well.

These past weekend we have been cleaning my yard at home, to make room for my partners "complete" project, so I can move the Burban and Buggy to the shop ....

Stay tuned !

Re: Project "Doom-Buggy" Early '60's Buggy...

Well I am back on it again ... I've been saving some money in order to finish her up.

I decided to jump back to by welding in some adjusters into the beam, before attacking the front bulkhead.

What a Nasty job of cleaning out the old grease !!!

I should of degreased before cuts ... But in a way, it help me out...
-

-
Used some 2x4 rect tubing to "jig" up the beam:
-

-
Tack weld some tabs in the middle:
-

-
2" marked out:
-

-
Beam after 2" removed. What you see in the tubes is YEARS of "grease jobs".....With a distinct smell only a VW entusiast can recognise....

Re: Project "Doom-Buggy" Early '60's Buggy...

I thought of this thread last Thursday. I stopped for lunch in Georgetown KY at a Chik-fil-A. As Iwalked by the drive thru, there was a '70s something dune buggy in line. It had an old "Sand Digger" decal on the front. The owner said it was an all original '70s buggy, even the the Torkthrust wheels.

Great project!...great to see the kids involved. Was a VW fan back in the 70's and owned a few. Moving to the beach soon. Next project will have to be one of these. dug
