Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Thanks!

The 305's giving me a little trouble. Nothing big, just slowing me down enough. The intake valves were all burnt up. So.. I just got new ones ordered tonight. I forgot when they're supposed to get here though. Whenever they do, I'll get back on that.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Sorry it's been so long. I got a job about 4 months ago, and it's really been keeping me more busy than on my truck. I have been working pretty much non-stop for the past 2 days though. In the past 2 days I've gotten the pistons out, taken off the old rings, ridge-reamed and honed the cylinder walls and gotten the pistons clean and ready to reassemble. I'm gonna try to put new rings on and do the valve job tomorrow, then hopefully get most of engine back together on Wednesday. Finally making progress. I'll post a pic of the block with the pistons out tonight, but will post more pictures tomorrow hopefully when there's sunlight for me to take them.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Well I just spent the past 2 hours reactivating my email and trying to remember what it was and all my passwords and whatnot. Pain in the rear thats for sure. Anyways, with my amazing Missouri weather I haven't gotten a lot done. Right now I'm trying to do everything at once and it isn't working out too well. Right now I have the heads on and the rocker arm assemblies. I've had to wait to get new push rods in the mail so I took my brakes apart and am now waiting for new wheel cylinders. Also just ordered a new clutch slave cylinder and am hoping to get new brake and fuel lines soon. I'll throw a couple pictures up for kicks even though I havne't done much. It's my last summer at home before I go to college this fall though, so after working almost full time with school and having no time for my truck, I quit my job and am giving it some much needed love. Gotta bring this truck with me to college, so I'd better bust it out these next 2 months or so. I'll post the pictures if I can remember my photobucket account. Haha. It's been waayyy too long.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Yea, I'm leaving town today to go to my farm for the next week. But hopefully the week after that will be the one where it gets going. I don't have too much tedious work left to do, just bolting stuff up, the only real big thing will be the timing. Once I get it running I'll be sure to post videos on pictures. I pretty much went through everything except i didn't take the camshaft out and do anything with those bearings, or the main bearings for the crankshaft. Other than that almost everything has seen brushes, a bench grinder, or been replaced. From what I hear they're real solid motors. So if you get it and have any questions, let me know or talk to the guys on the 6066GMC site.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Just one delay after the next. Thats the way it goes I guess... Anyways, I got the timing chain cover and water pump in, but as I was putting the new push rods in I figured out I only had 6 new ones. So I called the people up and they're shipping me the other 6 tomorrow. So until I get those I guess I'm going to try to get the distributor close to where it needs to be and do everything else I can without them. I'll have to post pictures of the body tomorrow as well, since the last body picture I put up was before I even started on it.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Hey, I know it's been a while since I've been online, but I've got some big updates to post. As of now, the engine runs, it runs rough because of what I believe is a timing issue. Until I get the freeze plugs changed out, however, I can't adjust the timing. I'll post a pic of the engine, and a video of my rough exhaust. Also, the bed is off the truck since I'm changing the shock and fixing and reinforcing the frame.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

I can't figure out how to add a video, so I'm just going to post a link to the video on my photobucket account. Like I said the timing is off so it sounds like a early 20th century tractor right now, but I'll get it fixed.

Thanks, man. It sure has taken long enough. I'm gonna be sooo happy once I'm driving it down the road where it belongs. Maybe off-road if I can get it high enough. Haha

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

I guess you weren't joking about the timing being off.
Sure you got the firing order going in the correct direction?
Take the cap off and have someone turn the motor over to see if the rotor is turning clockwise or counter clockwise... thats what it sounds like to me.

I'll have to check that tomorrow, but I think the rotor goes in a clockwise direction. I forgot to mention that when theres the break in noise those 2 or 3 times, a major fireball comes up through the carburetor. That might help with the diagnosis of my problem.

I have done this myself. I work on mainly Pontiac emgines in my business but I build other motors from time to time. I had a big block chevy once that I was building for a friend. I installed the wires in the wrong direction. Chevy and Pontiac are opposite.
I saw what I did when I tried to start the motor and a fireball shot out the top of the carb....

Stuff happens

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

I know it's been too long since I've been on when my build thread is on page 8... Anyways, I got the engine problem all figured out, it was soo stupid but the lower throttle flaps in the carburetor were almost wide open all the time, so I had to adjust that, plus I redid the timing a few times as well, and now it runs like a champ. Only problem being that the freeze plus are rusted through. They're the last thing on the engine that I didn't replace or restore. So hopefully I'm almost done. I took the bed off a few months ago to patch some of the frame up and run the brake lines. It was 56 degrees here today so I finally got around to doing the brake line from my front to rear axle, and got the bed back on. I'm gonna finish with the brake line along the crossmember and control arms tomorrow, and hopefully get some wood and do the bed as well. I'll post some pics once there's some light out for that to work.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Thanks man, it feels good to have a somewhat productive day. A couple months of those and this baby will be back on the road. I plan on driving it into my parents garage when they're both gone one day.. Lol. Then I'll disconnect the spark plug wires, and ignition wires so that it can't be started back up to get out. Haha. In my mind restoring a vehicle is a better garage use than just storing a newer one.

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

It was 81 degrees today and I soaked it up working on my friends 66 that I put a 68 frame under....
Got some sheet metal hung on her and will be bolting the suspension and disks on her tomorrow. Then she will be going in a garage until the owner saves some more pennies to finish her up.
I don't envy anyone that has to work in temps below 60 degrees.....
I hate the cold.
Keep the photos coming on your progress brother 60-66 guy...

Re: My 1963 GMC Build

Haha, that looks all to familiar with the bed off and the front end on jack stands. Mine was like that up until a couple days ago. I found my camera this morning and finally took the pictures I promised. I'm gonna go upload them to photobucket then throw them up on here.
