No its not in the family anymore (damn) Thanks for everybody's input and compliments. Theres no doubt that its 1907-1909 Excelsior Auto Cycle.
nvrsatisfied Thanks for the info it was cool to read about it. and now that i can see the bike clearer now you can see the belt drive its on the opposite side. We are not really a motorcycle family but I have a old photo of my dad age 4 on a old Indian. the photo was taken about 1956. It to is hanging in my office. Not really sure if just my prospective, or what but most photos of today or more modern photo just dont have the same Character, or luster (Looking for the right word) as the old ones do. theres something to be said about black and white photos. I have one more photo of my Other Great grandparents in my office. it was taken sometime during the late teens. posing in front of their brand new ford Model T. its a cool shot as well. Id post it but I don't want to be a Thread Hog!

That bike is a very early production Harley. In the first years (1908 on) they had that inner rim in the back wheel while a few years later the back wheel just had one rim with wire spokes.

Beautiful! GM sure did (and does) make some beautiful cars and trucks! What a great era the 60s and early 70s were for GM (before 1973 came along and ruined cars and trucks for a couple decades!) I'm jeleous!

You are exactly right Andy about these old pictures showing how this country got started..
Here is some more pictures of the bridge between Oregon and Washington with some old cars trucks and motor cycles ,,a few years ago the name was changed to the Lewis and Clark Bridge ..before that it was called the Longview Bridge if you were going to Longview Washington and if you were going to Rainier Oregon it was called the Rainier Bridge.. I graduated in '65. Muscle cars were everywhere....except in my driveway. I guess the high-point in the muscle cars were the COPO 427 Camaros and the 450-horse LS6 Chevelles. Of course the AAR Cudas, Hemi-powered Superbirds and Charger Daytona's and the Boss 429 Mustangs have to be considered, too. But, at the heart of their demise were the insurance companies who were gettin' antsy about all that horsepower (I remember 427 Cobras being driven on the street). Then, the Arab oil embargo of '73 made gasoline go up to almost a dollar a gallon! Waiting in lines for gas wasn't unusual in some areas. But that action spurred the government into doing away with lead in the gasoline and that is what really created a dead time for performance....like from '74 on, until Mustang and Camaro started dukin' it out for braggin' rights. If you look at both cars starting in 82-83, you'll see the start of some automotive fun. They weren't the super cars we had in the Sixties, but it was a start. I dug up a '71 Pontiac sales brochure for Pontiac Gran Prix, GTO and FireBirds. The catchphrase of the era was "Gross Horsepower" vs. "Net Horsepower". Still, compression ratios were down to 9.2:1, where they same engines of a year earlier may have run as much as 10.5 to 1. Again, blame it on the insurance companies.

If people knew back then how much these cars would be worth now they could all retiered off them. My father and his buddys always talk about how they coulda bought cars for less then $2000 and how now there worth over $50000 its insane how things work out like that.

Putting a date on myself here: My wife & I got married in 1969, and that summer, there was a "gas war." For you youngsters who don't know: that was where gas stations tried to see who could sell their gas the cheapest of anybody...... (Those days are gone forever) So, anyhow, gasoline was originally about 21 - 22 cents a gallon, and once got down to 11.9 cents / gallon (truth) for a few days. When I graduated from college & we moved to the Chicago area, a year or three later we were new-car shopping, and were teetering between a Gran Torino CobraJet & a Hemi Charger. Of all things, on the spur of the moment, we ended up buying a small "fun-car" instead, a VW beetle convertible !!! Six months later, people were lined up in -10 degree WINDY weather early-early in the AM, waiting for gas stations to let you in, just so you could buy a few gallons of their gas at ANY price. Sure was glad to have that VW, instead of a gas guzzler. Those near-new muscle rides were CHEAP back then. Get this....I SOLD my '71 VW (which I bought new) in the spring of '73. I bought a '56 Chevy 4-dr wagon, 265-stick, to replace it. Reason? Had just bought a house and the payments of $112/mo were more important to me than the $78.77 car payment. I know that some of you guys are reading this and thinking about those two items, but unless you were there....it won't matter.

Yep: My new off-the-lot VW convertible was $ 2721, total sticker price.
I put $ 500 cash down, & it about KILLED me to think about going that deep into debt. Payments of about $ 110 / month were very scary. |
