Re: 87' 4x4
Thanks Big Tex! Good eye picking out the sticker. I was there a few months ago and grabbed a sticker with the intent of saving it for the truck. Any new progress on your truck? I noticed your e-brake cable hanging down. I'm having hell figuring mine out. I think I'm either missing part of the cable or have parts from mismatched years that don't go together. Is that the factory red? That's a good looking truck.

Re: 87' 4x4
Thanks guys. Yes, I don't remember the paint code, but it was the the same factory red as the truck was originally.

Re: 87' 4x4
I worked on the truck over the Thanksgiving weekend. I had been saving a bumper for it from a M1008 with the military tow shackles. I spent most of the day Saturday sanding it and painting, but still wasn't happy with the way it looked. Then it occurred to me to just cut holes in the stock chrome bumper. I think it turned out pretty good. The bumper needs to be re-chromed eventually. I also need to find a set of shackles for it.

Re: 87' 4x4
It's coming along slowly but surely. I need to update my thread, i've done a few things lately. I've always like the military tow hooks and wondered what they'd look like with a chrome bumper. I like it! I may have to keep my eyes peeled for a set of those. Truck is looking good.

Re: 87' 4x4
Oh yeah, on my e-brake, i'm not sure what i'm going to do yet. I still have the part of the cab that has the ebrake that goes with the 85 frame, so I may try to use those pieces. My pedal and cable are 83, but coming from the rear end they are 85. I got caught in the period where GM swapped set ups. Think I can just super glue them together? I saw an infomercial one time where that stuff will bond anything!!

Re: 87' 4x4
Big Tex, I still haven't messed with the e-brake. Maybe super glue will work. ha,ha
I did as much as I could over the holidays. I got the exhaust done and windshield and wipers in. I got the Silverado emblems and bot tie emblem for Christmas. I also got the bed wood, but haven't had a chance to put it in yet. Here are some new pics. I found the military shackles I was missing for the front bumper. I had them run the exhaust out the stock location. I'm not sure if I'm crazy about the way it looks. Maybe it will look right when I get the rear bumper. I have been driving it around a little. It runs good, but occasionally it will die and then it's hard to turn over. After it sits a minute it starts right back up. I am wondering if I have some kind of vapor lock issue. I don't have the charcoal canister installed. The vent line was plugged, but I unplugged it and it still died. I also have a homemade fuel filler hose because they don't sell them anymore for stepsides. The last time it did it I took off the gas cap and drove it home. It hasn't died again yet. Anyone have any ideas? Last edited by Greenlee; 01-06-2013 at 06:34 PM. |

Re: 87' 4x4
I had a similar problem on a 2wd 77 I had. Someone had removed the charcoal canister and plugged the tank vent line, I think. I unplugged the vent and put a breather cap on it. Which seemed to work. I sold it not long after that so I'm not 100% sure though as it didn't get a lot of miles. Good progress! Those shackles look tough.

Re: 87' 4x4
It looks really good! I think you're right about the bumper and the exhaust. Once it's on, the exhaust should like right at home. Is the "Chevrolet" on the tail gate paint, or is that a decal kit? It looks good, and really sets off the back of the truck.
I'm really liking the shackles.

Re: 87' 4x4
I haven't got much work done lately, but I did buy a set of cheap all-terrains for it. They are 31x10.50x15's. The project is a lot more fun now that I can drive it around a little.

Re: 87' 4x4
Ahh makes sense. The life of being a garaged truck or car must be nice haha but they require it.
I hope to be able to see her soon, truck is beautiful!! Where did you have the truck get painted at? I'm trying to find a shop to do mine here in the near future.

Re: 87' 4x4
He might be a little on the high side judging from some of the custom cars that were in his shop. My deal with him was kind of unique because I also bought the truck from him. I had started a project converting a 2WD long bed to 4x4 and was searching for a 4WD 700r4 on Craigslist. My search pulled up this truck. It had been listed for months and apparently he couldn't sell it. He had started rebuilding the truck for a neighbor in 2005, but the neighbor lost his motivation to finish it. When I looked at the truck it was in pieces, but it included a new crate motor and freshly rebuilt 700r4. It had been sitting untouched for years. He didn't want to sell just the transmission or motor. To make a long story short, I ended up buying the whole truck and having him finish painting it.
I have been working on it for a couple of years now trying to get it back together. I under estimated how long it would take someone with my skills to put it together! Also, it was fortunate that I had the previous project because this think was missing all kinds of little b.s. parts that I robbed from my previous project. I was happy with his paint work and would use him again. |

Re: 87' 4x4
Dang that is pretty crazy!!
Yeah I'm trying to find someone that does good work and has had plenty of experience as well, price I mean that's no real big issue I'm getting a custom paint job so I'm already ready to spend at least 8k just on the paint job honestly. Yeah man it always helps when you have some experience like me I'm doing it cold turkey never restored a vehicle so it's a big learning curve for me thankfully it's semi easy to work on and I have a friend and cousin that's worked on cars so I have help too but it's been fun yeah I get pissed but it's part of the game so I'm not worried pushing through is the key for me. And I wouldn't be able to be so far if it wasn't for you, and everything that's helped me out on my build Posted via Mobile Device
