To b&m or not to b&m that is the question

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I like the Lokar but not the B&M (Had a B&M Z Gate in a 57 Chevy BigWindow Short Step and I found it hard to shift). In fact I am going to put a Lokar in my 67 Shortwide.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I always wanted one when I was younger. I also wanted everything modified. Now that I am older I have an appreciation for the stock stuff. Word of advice. get a floor shifter if you have a habit of using a worn out stock shifter as an arm rest. Dropping a tranny into first at 65 mph wreaks havoc on planetary gears

The Lokar floor mounted shifters are very nice. My cousin just put on in his 66 GMC. He has been in the tranny business forever and he was very impressed with the quality.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

Have the B&M ProRatchet cable shift inbetween bucket seats hooked up to a TH400. Had to take off the down shift linkage from carb to trans to use the Ratcheting option for hot rodding. If I didn't have a big engine then merging or passing would be a chore. B&M requires maintenance, cleaning and lubing, or you will be stuck in gear. Because of this, I'm looking into the Lokar mechanicle linkage. A plus, still have the columb shifter parts.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

If you still want the ratcheting, you can run a B&M Megashifter. Never had the first problem out of it. Plus, if you have a TH400, you should be able to run the electronic switch kickdown (what I have on mine) that mounts right on the carb. Had to run it on mine since I have a double pumper.

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I've gone with vaccum secondary's, will the switch still work, and is it an electronic trans vaccum kickdown? Does the Mega Shifter require shifting twice from reverse to park like the ProRatchet?

Look at the difference between the two:

B&M Mega Shifter:
http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Per...ck-Megashifter
Cable operated
12.6" high
Pull reverse lockout lever seperate from stick

Lokar
http://www.lokar.com/product-descrip...s-shifters.htm
Mechanicle
6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 23, & 32 inch shifter levers.
Psuh button reverse lock out

IMO, the Lokar looks nostalgic with modern indicators:
http://www.lokar.com/interior_pages/indicatorsboots.htm

But much more pricy:
Lokar shifter and boot+indicator are sold seperatly with a cost upwards of $450.
B&M Mega Shifter comes complete at a cost of $250

Re: Does anyone think a auto floor shifter kills a truck

I'm not sure about vaccum secondaries, but the way mines set up is the switch is mounted to the throttle assembly on the carb and basically when you go WOT, it depresses the switch signaling the transmission to go into its passing gear (kick down) granted mine has mechanical secondaries. I dont remember having to double shift to go from reverse to park, Ill pay attention to it tomorrow, but it does have the reverse lockout.

I know enough to be dangerous, better triple check that yellow wire connected to my TH400.
