Was the timing chain really loose / sloppy when you pulled it off ? Maybe it jumped time and got the timing off so much it just wouldn't start again. That would explain the sudden works one day, the next day it wouldn't start. Also, the dist would still turn, etc. I have to admit as I went through the thread I was thinking 180deg out .. but I'm glad you got it figured out.
