For some reason, I think I remember that there was a '77 or '78 El Camino in the movie as well.

That mid-size body style ran from '73-'77. So,nothin' wrong about the El Camino

Re: the movie Dazed & Confused 1971 chevy

Somehow I missed this movie when it came out (93, i looked it up). I graduated HS in 77 you would think it would have caught my eye.

I think I saw it on TV (vs renting it) but dont really remember it. Ill have to see if its available on Netflix so I can check it out again.

Just checked Netflix, its available for rental, not instant viewing.

lots of great cars in this movie. They published a book at some point that was made to look like the yearbook for that graduating class. A buddy of mine had a copy. I've been looking for a copy but yet to find one.

Gotta figure-as a period piece, most of those rides would have only been a few years old. I was in the class of '76, and there were plenty of late '60's to early '70's cars and trucks in the parking lot. I had a '68 Nova, and it seemed ancient at the time, but it was only 7 years old when I bought it.

Well, yeah, but at the time, these were just used cars, nothing special about them. I was looking through my dad's freshman yearbook (1976), and some kid at the time was driving a Boss 302. Dad remembers the car, but nobody thought anything about because it was just a used Mustang, just like we look at the old 4.6 Mustangs

I agree. I attended Wilson High (Long Beach,Ca) 1973-1977. There were numerous cars in the parking lot that were cool, but not very valuable at the time. Several late 60s/early 70s Camaros and Mustangs, a rare CobraJet 429 Ranchero, 55 Chevy 2 door, a really sweet 55 Chevy pick up, a 70 Chevy panel with cool paint and mags etc. Some of the richer kids had new BMWs and MGs etc (one had an XKE). One kids dad owned an AMC dealer and he had a brand new special order AMC Javellin with a 401 and drag-pac. Bill Stroppe had his race shop nearby and his son drove new Bill Stroppe Baja Broncos to school, on a few occassions even the race ready Baja trucks. There were lots of custom vans of every make, it WAS the 70s after all.

Nah, I came 30 years too late, but you're absolutely right. After 1980, there's not a car that can hold a candle to that sort of iron.

They were used cars, but they were special to us. It was cool to have a muscle car. Take the Mustang you mentioned. There were plenty of them available, but we knew what a Boss Mustang was and it got more respect than a "plain" Mustang.

I paid a grand for my 69 Charger (this was way before the Duke boys hit the scene lol) and that was a pretty big chunk of money to come up with back then. But it was a pristine car. Red, black vinyl top, 4spd with console. It was a cool car to have when we were cruising Colby

I believe we were the last generation that got to experience the car scene to its fullest.

Re: the movie Dazed & Confused 1971 chevy

I remember cruising and the cops would have someone pulled over and they would be making the kids dump out all their beer and then send em on their way.

As far as Grand Nationals are concerned, those are great performers, and heck most of todays performance cars, handle better, get better mileage and just generally outperform the old muscle cars ... I would still rather have an old muscle car over anything offered today.

Too much plastic and lack of style on anything newer than 72 (ish lol)

Another class of '76 member. Like others have said, at the time, just a bunch of used cars. Most didn't look as good as in the movie.

This past thanksgiving they had D&C on a cable channel. My daughter turned it on, she haad seen it. We all watched, was cool. Got the wife the movie for xmas. This post reminded me we still haddnt watched it. Just got done watching. Lemme tell ya...those guys in the movie had a boring party(grin).

Have fun....don t. ....

Been wanting to do that most of my life but it always just stayed outta reach
I'll always have my little slice of the U.S close by though, with my Chevy on the drive and the Stars & Stripes in my heart.
