Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

I have a '62 Bel Air 2dr post that my aunt and uncle gave me a few years ago, when I was 8 she told me that someday it would be mine and yes at 8 I was car crazy. This is the same car that brought me home when I was born, I have many memories of this car throughout my life and my uncle is the original owner. The car is stashed at a friends house and whenever the cover is blown off it gets notes and people stopping and asking if it is for sale at an astonishing rate [5 in one day]. I will not sell this car for any amount of money as the sentiment and family history is worth much more to me than $$$. Many cool cars and trucks have come and gone but the '62 will remain. When asked I just smile and shake my head, when asked if my '72 Cheyenne is for sell I say yes as soon as I finish it.

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

I had my all original numbers matching 1966 Econoline Supervan for sale a few years ago. I had a sign in the rear window and had a guy call me on it expecting to get it for cheap. He was planning to give it to his 16 yo daughter for her first car. I informed him it was $6500 and has a 3-spd manual trans with a FIRM clutch, manual steering and brakes. Also told him it wasn't the best first rig for a teen.

I've bought rigs from privite people by knocking on the door (got my 66 that way) but I only ask once or twice a year at most and I leave my phone number along with an fair offer. Now if the same person asked me 4 times a year if I was selling one of my rigs they would be escorted off my property at the berrel of my 12 guage. Once or twice a year I can deal with but 4 times is a bit much for me.

as much as it sucks some people only get the hint if you are an a** to them. you can also have him leave their phone number and tell them if and when you decide to sell it he will have first shot at it

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

People ask about my burb from time to time. A couple of years ago, a guy FOLLOWED ME HOME to ask if it was for sale. The very next day, a different guy did the same thing. I always tell them, "no, I don't WANT to sell it, but I will, if you're willing to pay crazy money for it."

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

I'll be fair about this..... For years i worked on a 1981 buick regal and it was all i wanted....until my dad sold it because the title was in his name and i was tired of being told it wasn't my car. I bought my own 86 and now it has an lt1, t56, gn rear, and all that, and i love the car. the problem is, i don't want to drive it much, and i still miss my old one because i could park it anywhere despite having a straight body. I have gotten offers on both and i refuse to sell mine. I am putting a 69 truck together and whenever i buy parts and tell them what it is for, someone tries to buy it off me but no one understands that i need more than i have in it to sell it and everyone wants everything for a song. i always refuse even an offer. my grandfather bought that truck new and gave it to my uncle, who then gave it to me. it has been in the family since new.

Having said all that, there are more important things in this world than belongings. no matter how much blood, sweat and time i put into any cars or projects, there are things that i can't replace. i can build another truck, regal, or computer. i can't build another brother, sister, father, mother, or wife. That doesn't mean i'll be happy to sell and i sure as hell don't want to see the car driving around after it is gone if i have to sell it. Never? Priorities. It's a car.

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

My reasons for hanging on to my dad's truck are purely sentimental. I too grew up in that chevy hauling hay, rocks, dirt, deer, rabbits, quail etc. From age 2 to present its a constant connection to my most cherished memories. I will never paint the inside as I can still see dad's notes written in the metal about oil changes and parts he needed. And now my kids are growing up in the truck and I am teaching them to drive in the same vehicle I learned in. Even my siblings love knowing its still in the family. Family comes first, no doubt, but I can say that this truck and lots of other memorablia help drive that lesson home.

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

I get people asking how much all the time. I definitely won't sell it. It was the first vehicle my parents bought new. I am reminded of all of our camping trips to the beach and mountains every time I drive it. It has been mine since I turned 16 in 1989 and there are too many good sentimental memories. It is a family heirloom that can't be replaced.

When people ask to buy it, I tell them it has been in the family for 41 years and it is NFS. That is usually all it takes.

I would have responded with.....Nope it is not made of gold, but it is a supply and demand thing. I have the supply, you have the demand, and I am not inclined to sell my limited supply. If your having a tough time understanding that ask your kid to give you a High School Economics lesson.

Even putting a willing to sell price, whether high or not, might not be the best choice. Somebody may come up with the money that you think is crazy and that you could build or buy another one. Then reality sets in and you cannot find another one that you are willing to work on. Selling is a double edges sword. I have gotten offers on my Chevelle (a teen wrote a note....a pink note), Monte Carlo (girl wanted to supprise her BF, she damn near passed out when I said 12k), 1974 C10 short step (just needed the truck so selling wasn't on my mind), and the 1967 short stepper I currently have (only asked if it was for sale but I tell them I have only had it since Oct last year).

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

I wish someone would offer me a fair amount for my Toyota or K10 - I'm sick of both of them and I need something nicer for college. I don't think that either of them will make the 400 mile journey needed. I get a few occasional compliments on my K10 and more often the Toyota but nothing cash wise - I enjoy taking to other people that like trucks.

I bought my Toyota because it was sitting by a garage with weeds growing over it, an offer later with a phone number and a few days later I had it at home

Re: When people keep bugging you to sell......

years ago. I was sitting on the core support of my K5 workin on the air cleaner and a guy with ADT signs walks up to me. He was asking all sorts of questions about it and I was happy to tell him all about it. He did even ask if I would be willing to sell. I said Naw, probably not. I have to much money into it to sell it for what it is accualy worth. After a couple back and forths, he then said How about I make an offer and I include a deal with the ADT home security for ya. I shook my head and smirked a lil cause I knew it was coming. I politly said no, I don't need another monthly bill for security. I have plenty of it here. Pointing at the 2 patrol cars at a couple different houses. And I also have smoke alarms. It was funny how he forgot all about the truck trying to sell me on ADT. I got tired of it and showed him my last security feature. I called over my Brothers 190LB. Old english mastiff that I was dog sitting. "Squirt". I basically raised the dog when I lived with my Brother during college so I taught him a few tricks in another language. Basicly the equivelent of stop and wait to get the stuffed kitty. Oh boy did it work perfect. Squirt would dang near salavate and start grumbling cuz he wanted to find the stuffed toy. But he would stay until I said to go. Needless to say Mr. ADT got the point and got out of there real fast.
