I agree, it's the powder coating not the wheel. You can do this yourself, get a grinding wheel that you can put in your drill, take your time and slowly grind away the powder coating from the center rim.

I just measured the 1984 rear axle hub flange at 3.175" So a bit more would be needed for clearance. I don't Know where the wheels come from but maybe some of the big chryslers had a 5x5" bolt pattern. I have some of the chrysler wheels on my utillity trailer and I know for sure that they are 5x4.5".

What are yours measuring?

Jeff,

Here are the wheels that are on now on my 85. I think they came off my 87 shortbed diesel but may have been off my 86 longbed. I had them powder coated in 2003 for my 86 project but it has gone nowhere. I bought my little plain jane 85 after the red diesel got totaled and put these wheels on.

They were tight over the centers but fit. As I tightened them down, the rotors/rear axles pushed some powder coating out. They look like your first pic. They are 15x8 and the truck has 1" front brakes and a 10 bolt.

went and checked mine on a 1986 long bed they all have the raise screw holes for the wheel center

not sure if this was mentioned, but the rims with the raised centers are for the older style cap, bolts from the rear, the flat ones are for the cap that bolts from the front, has notches were the wheel nuts are, compared to a nice smooth round cap like the early 70's. bolt pattern is the same, so just pull out the die grinder.

The "cap mounting from behind" makes sense with the raised mounting....can anyone confirm the early caps did indeed mount from behind? Pictures to prove it? That might just be it, and if so, an early rally wheel design I was unaware of.

The earliest rally wheel caps definitely mounted from behind. I've owned them personally.

I hang my head low with great embarrassment...and relief too!

I finally had time tonight to mess with the 75 a little. I picked up a matching fifth Rally wheel (round center), because I wanted all four to match...even though you will never siee it...just because I am anal. I pulled off the drivers front wheel/tire, and the Rally slid right on. Sweet! So I took out the drill and grinding bit, and removed the powdercoating from the inside hole diameter on one of the wheels...and wouldn't you know, it slid on perfect. Did the other three while I was at it. Tonight I will spray some grey epoxy primer/paint on the bare surfaces and be done with it.

The tire shop was way off in their measurements, and I simply took their word for it because I didn't have a spare wheel to test their theory on.

What kind of had me baffled too was my 88-98 powdercoated Rally wheels fit my 77 just fine...no grinding required.

So anyhow, I dropped off the fifth wheel for powdercoating, and should have it back shortly so I can finish getting these wheels and tires on the truck. I will also now have a semi-matching powdercoated spare...lol!

Thanks for everyones help and feedback. I learned a lot about Rally wheels here, something I don't think I will ever forget.

Jeff,

Do you mind telling what your guy gets to blast and coat a rally wheel ? I ask just to gauge my prices against other shops.

Also, do they do just the face of the wheel or the entire wheel, front, back, bead area and all ?
Is it single stage or did they clear the wheels ?

You can PM me if you prefer rather than posting here. Again, I'm not trying to drum up work just see where I stand with my prices.

Kevin, no problem

For a 15" steel wheel, they TYPICALLY charge $100 per wheel. That includes media blast, and two coats of finish for the entire wheel (front/back/bead).

Because I am a return customer (have had wheels, brackets, and valve covers done), they only charged me $75...and I got three coats on these (prime, color and clear).

They do real good work and are nice guys, and are comparable to other shops in the area.

Their turnaround time is about a week.

Are you pretty close to that? I really like the return customer discount, wish more places did that. Keeps business, and encourages word of mouth advertising. Regardless, I have seen your work, and wish you were closer to do mine.

I'm at 60 for single stage, 90 for two stage for the entire wheel.

The only time I've seen a rally wheel like the one in the 2nd picture (with the raised areas) was a 6 lug rally wheel.

A bit more on the wheels...

The wheels on my Gentleman Jim mount the center caps from the front. I have seen the rear mounted center caps, but I don't know what years they were offered.

I'm confident the wheels on the Gentleman Jim are original since they are in the matching gold to the stripe on the truck.

It would be nice to document when the changes from rear to front mounted center caps happened.

I'm glad your wheels ended up fitting. I was really wondering how your hubs could be an odd size...

Looking at the GM parts book it appears the change was mid 77....

The early caps (C10) show as 359758 and 341430

Mid 77 changes to 469664

A note in the book mentions change in attachment

The special retaining bolt for the late caps is also listed ....14003421

If I were going to guess, it would have been 77. I have found that 77 was a huge transition year. There are several things that ended in 77, started in 77, and were 77 only. The center caps changing that year goes right along with the rest of it.

I've had a ton of these old trucks, and countless sets of rallye wheels, and I have never seen the caps mount from the back side. So do those caps not have holes all the way through? If anyone has some I would like to see a pic. Then I can say I saw them.

Right side of the picture. They were round instead of scalloped and had three threaded bungs in the back side. The holes did not extend through to the front of them.

I'm going to say that the early caps probably had an issue with the bolt threads pulling out, so they were usually replaced with the revised caps.

FYI: The 6,000 mile truck on ebay has the center caps that bolt from the back. I had a 71 cheyenne that had those as well.

Dragging this back up and here is another visible difference between wheels. Note the inner ring on the rims. Painted pic is of ones with 1984 stamping and other is 1910. Ring is more pronounced on the painted wheels.

How many slots in the first wheel? Corker makes one with sixteen slots, my factory's only has 10. I can't tell by the pic but it looks like more then ten.
