my '47 shocks looked like the back legs on a grasshopper. They were mounted on the outside of the frame too.

Those are the ones I want. I have been trying to find out which ones are correct. If you have a chance can you look at the number on the body of the shock and tell me what it is?

I don't know of any numbers but you really have to already have some to get new ones. Look up 1947 chevy truck knee action shocks on eBay. They man have some old ones listed. Buy them then send them in for a rebuild.

sorry, i don't have those things anymore. What I didn't give away from the original drive train, went to scrap. Nothing worth salvaging from the original frame or drive train

So I worked on taking the front end off today and was updating this thread as I realized I never updated the back end so I added the back end pics too. Amazing what you find someone else had done to this in the appearance of restoring it almost 15 years ago. Because they didn't take it all apart last time I found the original color was orange or they might call it red. Now the debate. Prior to this I thought they had stripped this down and I wouldn't know the original color and was going to pick an original color and paint it that. We decided on the dark blue. But now........I know this was originally orange so the dilema is orange or blue. Since this is an original 47 and not been modified I wanted to bring it back as close to original as possible. Here are pics so far.

more pictures. I took the other fender off today...actually took me 2 days due to some "professional" restoration about 10 years before I owned this truck. I cant believe they welded the patch panel for the cab on to the fender. Then LOTS of filler to cover their sins. I know who the shop was that did this but not saying here. It just really amazes what will pass as professional.

figured out how the original spare tire and holder went on. Now I know why everyone got rid of them. Also cleaned up the edge of the grille surround to confirm the original color. Just a little investigation to find out the original color. Since this is an unmolested original 47 GMC I don't want to change something I shouldn't.

Worked on the project some more today. Found more evidence of the original color. This part probably has not seen the light of day for 68 years.

here are some things I have been doing this summer.
front end off. engine out and on the stand ready for refreshing. Firewall now original Pimpernel Scarlett color it came with.

Now need to figure the correct engine color and other colors under the hood.

The engine color for GMC IN 47 was olive green and can be bought from classic parts of America. The inner fenders are the same black as all the rest of the trucks accents. Here is original GMC documentation from '49.

On another note the factory interior color is polar gray and the steering wheel is Miami sand.

So was taking the engine apart to paint it. Now I still have a dilemma.
This engine sure looks like it was grey not olive. The block is still looking grey and the exhaust manifold it very grey yet and not rusted. Engine number says 47 and it is a 228 so now what? I have olive paint do I need to get Grey?

Sometimes its not so much the shop as it is the customer.... once they get the sticker shock of fixing it the RIGHT way they decide to TELL the shop to fix it the cheapest way possible and make it work. It happens way too often in the collision business.

It is amazing what you find when you take your time.Today I am working on cleaning up the engine. I want to paint it and replace the gaskets. Not cracking the head. Taking everything off the outside and will paint it. The dilemma has been a topic of discussion and argument all along. WHAT COLOR TO PAINT THE ENGINE. I want to go original. I have found the original color of the truck and now want the engine. Some say green some say grey. After doing some cleaning I found a small spot behind the exhaust manifold where is starts down, It is the only paint on the engine besides the black a prior owner put on it. And guess what...it is olive green. It is a nice thick enamel kind of paint. A lot of the engine is kind of grey and I was second guessing my original decision to go Olive. I am now comfortable in my decision.
