BlueJeep, Thank you. The dies are 1/8 step dies. I just made some 3/16 step dies on Friday but the corners were too sharp and ended up shearing the metal. So they need the corners radiused and I am going to take .015 off one face for some more clearance. Then they should work great.

Can you show some close ups of your bead roller. What brand is it?

Wondering if you have seen others that have put 4L60E's in and if they all require a transmission hump like your constructing? Was hoping with the 60 I wouldnt need one, but maybe its the S-10 frame as to why yours would need it?

I'm using a stock frame with 6.0L and 4L60E. Dont have the tranny yet and have not mounted the engine.

Fat Mike, Yes, I can get you some pictures of my bead roller. I work in a machine shop so I just made my own. It is a great little perk. Gears were bought locally, the spockets and chain were bought from McMaster/Carr and the power unit is a reworked 120 volt winch from HF. The rest was made at work. It also has bronze bushings. Sometime I want to make another one with more throat and a adjustable top shaft.

duwem, I do not know about the tranny hump. I am thinking that is is probably because of it being on a S10 frame. The truck is a buddy of mines and he mounted the engine. It has I think a camaro pan so he could get it down in the frame and it is really close to the front crossmember. So it could not be mounted any lower. The 1954 I built for someone was on a S10 frame too and it had a 700R4 in it and it need a tunnel. They both have the same cab mounts because I made and mounted both of them. It has to be a s10 thing.

reaper71, You need to post some pictures when you are done. You know how we all are about pictures. Start to cut out everything on that truck of yours and you can do the same. HAHA My buddy keeps telling me that when I work on mine next week that I will be cutting out the floor and firewall to do them in panels. If they were in bad shape I would do it in a heart beat but they are all ready redone. Just about 10 years ago and never seen the road. It is bad enough that I will be redoing some of the things that I all ready did. I just do things different and I lot better now. Stay tuned for the panel build maybe the end of this week.

Thanks for the info. My bead roller should be here this week or next, I can't wait to start practicing. Threads like yours get me excited to start making my own panels! I guessed on what I'd need and ordered 1/8" step dies and 5/16" round bead to start with. Do you get any deformation around the panel when you do the beading? Just wondering if I need to anticipate doing any stretching/shrinking with it too?

BlueJeep, As you figured I love working on sheet metal and is a lot of fun making your own panels. What bead roller did you get. I would get 1/8 step die and a 1/4 bead die. You will use them the most and maybe a tipping die. You do get some deformation around the start and end when using the beading die. I made a special block up and a pin with a radius on it that I use to finish out the ends of the bead. I will try to post a picture tomorrow of that.

I got the Mittler Bros 24" with the industrial motor power setup. I was going to get the 36", but then started thinking about the available space in my garage and downsized.

Wybrow, I did forget about the firewall still showing. The 1954 I did I only did the floor pan.


BlueJeep, You should be very happy with that. If I was going to buy one it would be that one but I am cheap and made one instead. The other one would be a Lazze one but it is alot more but nice features and dies. Here is that tooling I said about. I put it under the end of the bead and use it to finish the end and hammer the panel flat from deforming. It is just a 1018 steel block with a ball mill ran in and a dowel with a radius ground on the end. Post some pictures when you get your bead roller.

So, so nice and clean buddy! Great job on the booster recess. Will you be putting in much bracing to stop the firewall flexing? Will you be doing the pedal box mounting or is that for the owner to do? I bet your hanging to get into the panel!!

AUSSIE54, Thank you. Yes it will get braced up. I am also going to put tube across the cab under the dash also for the stearing column. But yes I will have to do something so it does not push on the firewall. I will tie it all together. Yes it is going to get moved in real soon (my panel) for my working holiday vacation.
