Re: I am Back!
First off cut the wood to the final dimensions- I used plain sawn red oak (reason is that the stain will not be on the cuts if you have to do it after you stain)
Then get some white vinegar and steel wool. Rip the steel wool into small bits so the vinegar can disolve it easier. Place the ripped up pieces of steel wool in a bottle (I used a spray bottle). Then dump in the vinegar. Let it sit over night. Next you place your cut wood outside and spray or brush the vinegar stain on the wood- it goes on clear but right before your eyes it transforms. I would recommend trying this on a sample piece first to make sure the wood reacts the way you want. Here are some pictures of the process. This is the wood cut around the rear tubs (templates are towards the top) IMG00614-20120620-1656 by Malibob, on Flickr This is the final cut to piece wood for the bed- unfinished red oak IMG00659-20120622-1513 by Malibob, on Flickr This is with a coat of vinegar stain (it reacted too quickly to show the darkening) still wet on the boards IMG00662-20120625-1648 by Malibob, on Flickr This is after it dried out for a couple of minutes IMG00663-20120625-1701 by Malibob, on Flickr There it is. DSC_3264 by Malibob, on Flickr You can add cracks and knots too if you want it even older looking. A dremel with a cutting bit can add neat looking cracks if you follow the grain. If you want a knot, just find a spot on the grain where a heart is (looks like an oval) and with a hole saw drill in at an angle, when it is stained the vinegar mixture will fill these areas in darker because the grain is more open at those locations. If it isn't dark enough for your liking, paint it black. There are tons of different ways to age wood but this is what I liked the best so far.

I saw you rolling through Salem last weekend. I was parked over by grumpy. I didn't get a chance to check out your truck but hopefully next weekend I will.

Re: I am Back!
Ok... update time. Bought a pair of doors from eastern part of the state. Came in looking pretty good. Anyhow- as I suspected, they dont match the rest of the truck. But I sanded a little bit and if I am real lucky I can get it pretty close. All for not though because those stupid signs on the side are glued so I am sure they wont come off without a fight?
Any ideas on how to remove other than the adhesive remover? It doesnt seem to work on 50 yr old paint. Next question is if I have to paint the truck- keep it red or go white with a red stripe? I think I would like either and always wanted a red one (got it) and always wanted a white one too (could be next color)? Thoughts? What to do about the patina? Oh hell, who am I kidding all you guys want are pictures. LOL DSC_3432 by Malibob, on Flickr DSC_3433 by Malibob, on Flickr Wet sanded a bit. DSC_3434 by Malibob, on Flickr RAW

Re: I am Back!
Try a 3M Eraser wheel on the stickers. They do wonders for removing double-sided tape and factory applied 4x4 badges.

Re: I am Back!
Ah, a day or 2 too late. I sanded them off- those suckers were on there for a while. So then I spotted them in. Much closer. Passenger side isnt done yet but thats next and I should have a hood this week too.
new door- painted by Malibob, on Flickr Once I see how close I can get the hood to match will decide whether or not the whole truck gets sprayed.

There are so many cool build threads I have a hard time keeping up. I just got to see your bed process and it looks fantastic. Good luck on the TOTM!
