Yes that is true. I had a buddy who bought a 65 3/4 ton with a 292, 3 on the tree 4x4. We swapped it out to a 4 spd and boy what a difference in the crawl ratio.

I had a 72 blazer that had a stick in it. It was the one with the granny low gear and in 4 low you could let the clutch out without even touching the gas.

Re: 66 GMC 4x4 Sub. Just got it!

If you switch to a disc brake front differential, you will at least have to change your master cylinder to a dual reservior disc/drum master, along with the proportioning valve. This can be done as manual brakes or power brakes.

More than likely your differentials have 3.73 gears. But as said above, back then you could order most anything. When searching for a donor for the front differential, if you find a '76-'87 K5 or K10, the rear differential will have the wider 2-1/2" brakes. That would be worth purchasing for the brake upgrade IMO.

What gears did these trucks come with? Mine was a stick shift truck. It seems like they must be low to me. It has no problems getting up to speed. But then again my daily draiver is on 35swith no geand a 3 speed auto so maybe I'm a bit used to a more sluggash start from that. Thanks again guys.

Dude you aren't wasting any time! Two tone? I think that looks awesome. The wheels don't look too shabby either. Nice work.

I only painted one door to see if i was going to like the colors. I also put a new shifter in, new side mirrors, backup light lenses, rebuilt the heater lever system on the dash, and put a stereo in. I was kinda bummed the dash was cut up for a stereo before i got it but oh well, made it easy to deal with a new one. Now that I know I like the paint Id like to do the whole interior so i can soundproof and carpet it

Re: 66 GMC 4x4 Sub. Just got it!

Today I pulled the distributor out of the burb and put a different one in. I replaced the one in my '76 about a year ago with an msd hei unit. So, I used the perfectly good one I pulled out to replace the suspect one in the burb. It had a dead miss at start up but would go away after it warmed up a bit. I wasn't sure if it was a carb,,, ignition,,,, lifter,,,, issue but beings the dist. swap wouldnt cost a dime Id start there. Cured the problem and can tell a huge difference in performance. And it took like 10 minutes! Now the wife claims the saved $ should go should go into her clothes shopping fund.

Ah, now you see where you went wrong? You should have taken the MSD out of your '76 to try it out. Then you would have to say to your wife 'Well honey it looks like I will be needing to buy another distributor to put in the '76 now"

You my friend are a genius! Hahaha! Seems I might need to pull the new dougs headers off the '76 and check for clearance to see if I can get the same ones. Once they are bolted up may as well just leave them and get another set. Shoot I can probably pull the front axle and steering box to test out your pewer box bracket! Hahaha!

Yeah, not sure what the color name is for sure but it was all one solid color kind of an olive green. Everything, seats, dash, floor, all of it.

Re: 66 GMC 4x4 Sub. Just got it!

Hey man, my new burb is at the truck terminal in VA. About 50 miles away. I should be able to pick it up Monday. I bought a set of axles from an 87 Burb to give me front disk and the ability to raise it of I decide to.

You really inspired me to get 1 of these, so thanks! I guess

Mike
