Got my engine and trans put in today, everything went pretty smooth considering I was a one man crew. I did have to become a contortionist to install the drivers motor mount bolt but everything else was fairly smooth.
Hopefully I will have it running in the next week and then I'm going to haul it to have exhaust run on it. I put the new wiring harnesses on that I got from the truck shop, they were made by M&H electrical. They seem to be nice quality.

I plan on driving it a lot. I just wanted it to be nice, and its hard for me not to over do things. The engine did turn out nice and I am keeping the tank in the cab, I've never had a problem with them in the cab.

Its suppose to be direct fit with HEI and internal reg. alt. upgrades, so far everything has went well with it but I won't know for sure till I get it all together. It certainly is a nice looking harness...... The old one was a mess and I didn't want to have to piece in the hei and alt. I think I gave $80 for the engine harness and $180 for the lamp forward harness.

Worked on the truck today and got it running. I had the distributor one tooth off ,once I got it right the truck fired right up and ran pretty good. It is VERY loud, I had a couple of 4 foot pieces of pipe I put on it with no mufflers so I'm sure all the nieghbors heard it running. I'll have a better idea of how it runs after I get the exhaust run on it.
I also got the steering column put back in, it sits close to the dash with the int. shaft collapsed 3 inches. I also installed the new gauge bezel. The bezel looks good and I painted the needle while I had it apart. I just hope all the gauges are good in this cluster.

Got the rad. support painted last week and installed it today, it turned out nice. I took a pic of the mounting instructions since there are always guys asking how the pieces stack up.
I painted the heater box with the same paint as the support, I used nason acrylic enamel. I hope to get all the fluids in it tommorow and maybe get it moving under its on power.

I got the truck back on the ground yesterday and its moving under its own power. I plan on taking it to the exhaust shop next week and then doing any final tuning on it.
I installed some aftermarket gauges, the oil pressure gauge wasn't working and I was sure the water temp. was going to be the same. I didn't want to start changing out gauge sets trying to get a set that worked. I also put the heater controls in and worked on getting the blower motor working. I was getting nowhere on it and power was coming and going to the fuse block???? .....I figured out why when I looked at the ignition switch plug, the wires were falling out the back of it. The po had done a real hack job on it and twisted the wires together and taped them. I'm glad I found this in the shop and not on the side of the road. I cut the end of the ignition wires off the 71 parts truck I had out back and wired it in with butt connectors. not the perfect solution but way better than before and everything seems to be working as it should including the blower motor. I'm getting close to driving it , I have to paint the inside of the fenders, hood and the wheel tubs then I'll be ready to put the front sheet metal back on. Hopefully I will be riding in the next couple of months.

Ok more progress, I had the exhaust run on the truck this week and it looks and sounds nice. I used a set of flowmaster 40 series that I had from a truck I parted out. I blasted them and painted them cast gray.
I painted the inside of the fenders and the fender wells last week and hung them today. I've been working on getting all the hardware blasted and painted to hang the grill , cowl and hood. I still have to paint the bottum of the hood and I'm trying to figure out how to strip the anodize off the grill so I can polish it, so far the drain cleaner or paint stripper hasn't worked. I'm going to research it some more and try a different drain cleaner.

There are (used to be around here, not now) places that do metal stripping. It's actually plating in reverse. It releases the plate metal from the base metal. You might check into that...who knows Any pic's of your wifes LeMans??? |

I tried the drain cleaner from the home depot and it did the trick for removing the anodize on the grill. I saw this on a youtube video someone posted a couple of weeks ago and this was what the guy was using.
I put it on with a foam brush and let it set for about 15 minutes , I then polished it with some mothers mag and aluminum polish. I could still see the brush marks after the first round so I brushed it on again and let it set for about 10 minutes. after that I polished it again and it shined like chrome. I'm real happy with the results so far. I only did it on a small spot that would be hidden by the bumper in case it went wrong. I plan on taking the grill apart and polishing the whole grill and then clear coating it.

I got the grill polished today, it turned out pretty good. It was a nightmare getting the grill apart, I took the inner grill off and both end grill supports. The flat head screws that held it together were extremely rusty and I had to cut most of them out.... Flat head screws should be outlawed and anyone caught using one should be jailed for life.
The bad news : I took the truck for a ride today for the second time, when I got on the truck it sprayed oil on the windshield (since it doesn't have a hood). When I got it home and investigated it the front pan seal was pouring, so it looks like I wil be pulling the engine back out to put a pan gasket set on it. It has a chrome timing cover on it and the front at the seal looks like it is flared too far forward so I'll also put a stock cover on it. I knew I shouldn't have trusted the po work, he had put this gasket set in new. The last pic is of the cotton buff I used to polish the grill, along with the polishes I used.

I got the grill put back together today, it looks pretty good. I clear coated the grill after I polished it. The headlight bezels and emblem are new. I also painted the inner grill argent silver.
I pulled the oil pan off today in the truck instead of pulling the motor, it went pretty smooth. I'm going to use a fel-pro one piece pan gasket, I hope this fixes the problem.

Its been a while since I updated my build. I had a month long set back trying to fix an oil leak that turned out to be a missing bolt. The details can be found here in a thread I posted asking for help........http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=519162
I have been driving the truck some around the block. I got the rally rims blasted and painted. The tire shop only had two tires so they had to order me two they are suppose to be here monday.I ordered some trim rings and center caps off e-bay and I'm still waiting on the rings. I went with the 88-98 center caps.
