Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

From 1967 thru 1971 there were 3 trim levels, the deluxe was the base model, the custom, and the super custom. In 1969 the Sierra and Sierra Grande models were added as a package of popular options, not trim levels. In 1972, GMC changed everything and now used 4 trim levels. Sierras and Sierra Grandes were now trim levels and not option packages. The custom was the base model, then super custom, sierra and sierra grande.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

So in 71 my truck was a cst with the Sierra grande package. That makes sense.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Well,in '71 many Chevy Cheyenne SPIDs still read Custom Sport Truck. CST means it was a Super Custom. I always thought Sierra.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

I finally took my lazy butt over to the fie cabinet and looked into some brochures and saw that the '67 base truck was called a Deluxe, although there were never any emblems for that trim level.
On the Camper Cruiser it didn't say anything about any trim level requirement, only equipment, just like Custom Camper.
The '67 Brochure shows both the Custom and the Super custom with the same fender badge. Not sure what the Custom script was all about as far as when and how that appeared on a Custom.

So,what you are saying is until '72 the Super Customs and Sierras had the same seat and Super Customs had carpet? So,all but the '72 Sierra Grandes had scrolled vinyl (CST int*) and Sierra/Super Custom had cloth (Custom int*) or did all three have scrolled vinyl and Customs had the cloth? I'm just trying to see what the difference in "trim level" and "package of popular options" is. If they were the same trim level then they would have the same seat and other trim level features, right?

You are right about nothing on the glove box door, plain no emblem, but I can't verify the Super Custom badges on the fender, some one filled the holes and they were gone. So if it is custom deluxe equip you think it should have Super Custom badges on the front fenders? I want to put it back together the way it came from factory.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

On a '72 I know the Chevy Custom Deluxe is the same as GMC Super Custom and it would have Super Custom on the fender badge. It would have lower side and tailgate trim, including lower piece and no tailgate band. It would have the scrolled door panels, cloth insert seat with full foam, color keyed rubber mat, fancy dash knobs, and window trim.
I'm not sure about 69-71 Super Customs by what Factory Stock says. I would have thought the Super Custom '71s were like the '72s and 69/70s like a Chevy Custom, which is the same as a 71/72 Chevy Custom Deluxe.
It appears that only the '72s had the trim level on the universal fender badge. That's what I call the one used after '67 because it's the same emblem for everything from Sprints to 9500s with an interchangeable plaque below GMC. I have an N.O.S. one that says 3500 and is blank. No engine,no nothin',just 3500 and horizontal lines like the background on all the others. I still don't know what the 3500 Custom Camper ones come from, either.

This may be true in the south but in Canada 67's i believe they were black and grey and so was the glove box door. I have had mulitple 67's gmc's and they were all like this. I have a 68 and 70 gmc and they are painted the same. Here are some pic's of a Canadian 67 GMC super custom i had till last year. only thing i added was the tilt column and clock wasn't original. i also robbed the buddies out of it for my short bed project.
X2 on this-My bezel and glove box are black on my 67 GMC. The body colour is/was medium blue. We're pretty thrifty up here so Oshawa might have saved money and said that was a "contrast" colour (that is doesn't match so we'll say we meant it to be like that!)

Thanks for this info. I have had two GMC's where the glove box and dash bezel were color keyed to the interior color in this case black in my 72 GMC Super Custom.

Does any body know in the Super Custom if the brake and gas pedals came from the factory with the stainless steel trim around the rubber pads?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

A '69 Super Custom (and I assume 70/71) got the headliner. It didn't have to be a Sierra or Sierra Grande. I never knew that. So,all 69-71 Super Customs got scrolled vinyl seat, keeping it the equivalent to a Chevy CST (Cheyenne in '71). And,only '72 Super Customs were equivalent to Chevy Custom Deluxes. That means 69-71 Super Customs got the exterior wood grain.

Yes,they would have the trimmed pedals as well as dash knobs and cab glass.

I never knew '72 GMCs could be had with the plaid seat inserts. Just an option on it's own,I guess. I have never know of GMC offering the Highlander pkg, which was the only way a '72 Chevy got plaid.

Was that true for Super Customs in 67 as well? The Customs then did not have the trimmed pedals.

Were the pedals trimmed for Super Customs in 67? The Customs then did not have the trimmed pedals but did have the knobs and all other bright work around glass.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Some of the best GMC talk we have had on here in a while. Making my head spin!! My 69 Custom has the GMC Custom badge on the glove box. It has the "Custom" Badge on the outside of the door. It has the turquoise gauge cluster, glove box door, seat, dash pad, steering wheel, door panels ect.. Has the Vinyl seat with cloth inserts. Has the GMC 1500 V-Eight outside fender emblems. Does not have the bright trim foot pedals or a headliner. Per my GMC sales brochure Grande and Sierra Grande was a option in 1969. Does anyone know if Turquoise was an interior color option in 70-72?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

So...in 69-71,a Super Custom is top-of-the-line (CST),just like in 67/68,but you could add to that the Sierra or Sierra Grande options. What I want to know is what exactly did a Sierra Grande get that a Sierra didn't and what did both of these get that the Super Custom didn't? The only difference I knew between Sierra and Sierra Grande was the dash wood grain, which a 69/70 didn't get on any...and also not '71? If a '71 Super Custom is the highest trim level, than wouldn't it have the scrolled vinyl seat that comes in a Sierra? Is a '71 Super Custom interior the same as a Custom, except it has carpet and vinyl seat (like Cheyenne)? The Custom would have color-keyed mat and cloth inserts (like Custom Deluxe). Is the only difference between a '71 Super Custom and Sierra the bedside emblem?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

First photo shows '71 offerings, other 2 photos show '72 offerings. There was a realignment from 3 trim levels from 67 thru 71 to 4 trim levels in '72.Deluxe went to Custom. Custom went to Super Custom. Super Custom went to Sierra. Sierra Grande was now a new trim level for '72. During '69 thru '71 Sierra and Seirra Grandes models did exist, but they were considered additional option packages not trim levels. In '72, they were no longer options packages, the Sierra and Seirra Grandes were trim levels. It appears a Sierra from 69 thru 71 was an option package available, even a base model, that gave you the custom comfort and appearance group, chrome front bumper, inside mirror, chrome hubcaps and lower side mouldings. The Sierra Grande from 69 thru 71 was the super custom trim level package with everything the Sierra came with except the lower mouldings were swapped out with door edge guards. Remember, these are the minimums, seperate options could always have been added when ordering any trim level truck up at the dealership.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Does any body know if the fancy side marker lamps (with metal trim), and the tailgate "GMC" band came with the Super Custom? My Super Custom has both of these perhaps they were installed by a PO, however the SPID lists the B85 Belt Moulding, and the BX2 Body Side Moulding, would the marker lamps and tailgate band be perhaps included with these Options?

Remember, these are the minimums, separate options could always have been added when ordering any trim level truck up at the dealership.
I still don't see what the Sierra Grande option package gives the Super Custom that it didn't already come with. Are you saying the '72 Sierra Grande came with no lower mouldings? The Sierra option package must have given more to Deluxes than Customs, because the Custom already came with the Custom Comfort & Appearance Group and lower mouldings.

If you're taking about a '72 Super Custom then those things would have been added. The 'Super Custom became the mid-level trim which include a strip of trim across the bottom of the tailgate, black accented lower side mouldings, standard lenses on the side, and no tailgate band. Tailgate bands only came on the trucks with woodgrain.
