Re: 1970 C10 SWB - Project "Sprout"

Finally picked her up today! I'll get more pictures when I have it off the trailer and start putting everything back together, but so far it looks great! Makes all my crusty old trim look really bad though...

Re: 1970 C10 SWB - Project "Sprout"

As of now I still have the truck parked in my big shop at work where I can finish getting it put together out of the wind and rain we've been getting lately. So far I've got my carpet, insulation and new trim installed, new deluxe side marker lights, new dashpad, kickpanel speakers installed, did some adjusting to get the doors to shut a little better (new weatherseals and original donor doors, so I'm still tweaking to get them right), and adjusted the alignment on the bed.

Still need to get the old step bumper brackets removed (there's a small weld in addition to the bolts holding them on), get the new sport bumper installed, replace the front bumper with a little straighter one I picked up, get some center caps installed, swap the carb for one that isn't a marine carb and has a choke (thanks for that one previous owner!) and adjust the timing on the new engine, and install the rear cab trim. I need some machine screws and an extra set of hands for that one... There's some other minor cleanup work to do on some of the wiring and the engine bay, but that's the bulk of it. Not really planning on a drop at this point. With the roads around here it just makes it nice to have a little more clearance. I do need to start looking for a cleaner grill though. This one looks like its had all the chrome blasted off or something. The inner grill looks good. I want to pick up a different steering wheel, and I need to get the visors swapped out from the dark green for a black pair (or dye them I suppose). I might put them on the parts board to see if anyone wants to do a trade. I should probably look for a power brake booster at some point as well, but that'll probably be a next summer job. I also recently noticed that I have two types of wheel trim rings. I have two of the deep 3" style, and two of the shallower 2" ones. Need to look for a trade for two more of one or the other.

Here's a couple of progress pics as I'm getting it back together...

Thanks guys! It's coming together... Gonna go spend my day off tomorrow getting more done. I'm on the hunt for a nice clean replacement grill within driving distance that I can spend some Christmas bonus money on!

Re: 1970 C10 SWB - Project "Sprout"

Worked on the truck for awhile today with my oldest son. Took me about 2 1/2 hours of grinding and hammering to get the old step bumper brackets off (they were bolted and welded on), but once that was done we made some pretty good progress for a few hours. Got the sport bumper installed on the back, swapped the front bumper for one in better shape, installed a replacement Carter carb so I could get rid of that stupid marine Edelbrock that came with it, and we installed the cab divider trim. That was definitely the most stressful part, but I think it turned out pretty darn good!

Forgive the crappy colors in the pictures. Took them with my cell phone under shop lights and the blue light of a rainy day outside the garage doors. I'll get my wife to take some good ones when we have a nicer day...

Very nice work. I love that you kept it mostly stock. Looks like you had a great start with a solid foundation to start with.

Re: 1970 C10 SWB - Project "Sprout"

Thanks Tbone! I'm generally a fan of the stock-ish look on most of my old rigs.

Gearys, I'll put the lower trim on. Just haven't got that far yet... I have most of the pieces I need, but I'm missing one cab corner piece and the pieces that go in front of the front wheel wells. I have them, but they are pretty messed up and not really worth putting back on. The rest of the pieces were in pretty good shape though.

On a related note, I was chatting today with an elderly neighbor of mine that has a beat to death 70 4x4 longbox. He said it has around 475,000 miles without a rebuild! He messed up the front end years ago in a collision with a Mustang, but used the insurance money to buy all new GM parts to repair everything (passenger fender, inner and outer grills, headlight buckets, and a new bumper). And all of those parts are still sitting in boxes in his garage. No luck talking him out of them yet, but I think I'll be patient and see if he changes his mind. He had no idea what they are worth, but he insists he'll put them on his truck someday (which is akin to putting lipstick on a pig at this point). But, at least he loves his truck, so I can't really blame him!

Ya, it's the stock medium olive color (paint code 504 I believe). It really pops on a base/clear paint job though. I'm really happy with it so far, and it doesn't seem to show dirt and dust very bad, at least compared to all the black trucks I keep buying!

Re: 1970 C10 SWB - Project "Sprout"

Been awhile since I made much progress, but my son and I got the lower trim reinstalled today. Mostly driver quality stuff, but I did pick up good cab corners and fender pieces from DeadHeadNM (thanks again!) and a lot of four new / no package passenger side front/front fender pieces (3 spares if anybody needs a clean one).

Here's a before and after comparison:

That sure is nice. I hope I can get mine to look that nice. Its waiting patiently outside the shop til the '66 gets done.
Would like to save a pic of yours to my desk top back ground for motivation.
