Re: K20 Challenge
OK - front brakes on the closed knuckle are done! I had the outer axle shafts cut down to fit the 72 spindles and everything fits great. I hope to get the diffs and the leaf springs mounted by next weekend.

Re: K20 Challenge
I made some progress this weekend, got all the leaf springs on and the rear diff under the truck. Also started polishing up my old wheels that I'm probably going to use and painted up my brake booster/master cylinder for the disc/disc set-up.

Re: K20 Challenge
Brake cyl setup looks awesome, is it just painted or are there plated parts on there?

Re: K20 Challenge
I'm starting to do the engine now, dropped the block off at the machine shop to get some work done. I was just going to do a 350 punched .040 over but my block sat around for a long time and got rusty in the cylinders, we're going to have to go .020 more. So......... with me having to buy pistons and have the crank turned to clean up the rust on it, my guy is talking me into a 383 package. I've had one a while back in my Firebird so I do know the great torque they produce. I think I'm going for it.
Here's my Firebird that I ended up selling to my cousin - |

Re: K20 Challenge
Cleaned up the manifolds with POR15 manifold paint. I'm not sure if I'm going to use them or headers.

Re: K20 Challenge
Well I decided to go 350 not 383, parts on order and block getting bored. The front diff is under the truck and it's starting to look more like a truck instead of just a bunch of parts.

Re: K20 Challenge
K20 Challenge update - I am going to miss my target, obviously. A lot has happened in the last 4 months, unfortunately nothing to do with the truck. I have relocated with my job and have moved to Kentucky, this has derailed the project and it has been put on hold. My budget for the truck had taken a huge hit with the expense moving and establishing a new household but I will continue to work on it when I can. Here is a recent picture of how far it's come.

Re: K20 Challenge
Sad to see it leave the area but happy for you at the same time.
It will be a beautiful truck when it is done and I know it will get done! I enjoyed the little time that I got to spend working on it with you. Dave

Re: K20 Challenge
Thanks Dave! It WILL get done for sure. I brought it to the new house in Kentucky last night. I just need to get the garage set and get back to work on the truck.

Re: K20 Challenge
Hey Dave!
I haven't laid hands on the truck since I rolled it into the garage. I need to get the garage in order, need to organize and get some better electrical. My garage has only 15 amp breakers, can't even run the compressor. |

Re: K20 Challenge
Man, awsome looking rig you have. I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind. I have a 64 k20 and would like to do the disk brake conversion. I believe we have the same d44 closed knuckle front axle. Do you know if any d44 with disk brakes will work or do I need one from a '72 as you used? Also in this swap what did you change from the original closed knuckle system. I know hubs, drums, just looking for a parts/shopping list I suppose.
Thanks you for your assistance. |

Re: K20 Challenge
So, if I read this right. You used '72 spindles, backing plates, disks and calpiers. All you had done was machined the '69 outer axles stubs to fit the '72 spindles. Is that correct? Do you have the '72 outer spindles for a measurement of the difference to be machined off? Thanks for the information. This will be a to do on my '64 closed knuckle axle.
