Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

Post up some side shots of the truck and I can Photoshop it for you.

Is there a wheel you like? Maybe if you see it dropped and 20's (I'm guessing?) that will help with the decision.

I'm sure he's a good kid, and you're a good dad but I'd still (just me..) give him the option to lower this one or buy his own and maybe let him choose (?) It would be fun to search and find the right truck for him too. I look for them on CL etc. even when I'm not in the market to buy. You never know when you'll run across one.

I bought this SWB Sierra Grande CST 350 matching numbers recently for $2500. A lowering kit and wheels / tires would cost that.

Yeah ! Good idea Rene. Bag it. Up when you drive it, down when he drives it!

Gawd Gumby is stunning brother.. Absolutely incredible.. I'm painting my 68 that color. Done.

Is it 503 or 518? Looks like the earlier 503 code. thanks.

Hi,

with all the problems I've had in my 67 300 SEL (they are fixed now after replacing all three suspension valves) I prefer them in my dashboard.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

Everyone suggests buying him another truck, or his own project. Has anyone asked if this might not be financially feasible? For those that insist that lowering a truck ruins its value, you are wrong.

Thats a great looking truck that would look even better with a properly installed lowering kit. It will improve the looks, handling, ride and value.

If you start letting him do all that he is going to want it pretty well full time, so unless your ready to give up your ride I would tell him to start looking for his own.

You know, I was thinking about that when I responded back in post #4. However, right after in post #5 19673ontree posted he was thinking along the same lines (much to my relief). But your point is well taken, it is too easy to spend "other people's money"!

You can buy a truck for the same price as a set of wheels/tires/lowering kit.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

Yep, keep that thing the way it is and get him a truck of his own to mess with.

When I was 16 I used to drool over a 54 Ford that was on a lot outside of town. I took my Dad to look at it once. He looked it over top to bottom like he was really interested and said it looked like a great car. I asked him if he'd buy it for me and he said no. He gave me the keys to his old beat up old work car and said "drive this". Within 6 months, I wrecked the beater being an idiot teen driver. 20 years later I finally have a vintage vehicle like I always wanted and I don't drive it like an idiot (most of the time).

Long story short...

Just Say No.

Unless they plan to cruise together more often. It'd be nice father and son quality time.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

If its his truck let him do what he wants after he works to save the $$$ to lower it and add wheels.

If its your truck tell him to get a job and buy his own and you do whatever you want.

I have a couple toys and when my kids of driving age we will build him his own toy with a much smaller budget so he dosent touch mine...lol

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

Hey 19673ontree...

Looks like you have plenty of feed back. When it comes down to it you got to do what best for you and your son. As have been said...if you lower it can be put back to stock position. That's what I did. (I lowered mine)

No matter what decision you make it will be the right one. I'm glad your son takes interest in your truck. Working on your truck together is a great way to have father and son time.

Best wishes for whatever direction that you go

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

OK this is from a guy that lowers everything..........NO!!

If it is to stay your truck and you want it stock ride height, then tell your son....my truck, my ride height. You know that once it is lowered there will be something else wanted (dual exhaust, bigger engine, or it will not be low enough). Time he builds his own truck, you buy the truck (as long as he is in school) and he buys the parts to do it the way he wants.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

That thing's like a time machine .. I'd lower my lawnmower if I could but on this one, I wouldn't touch it.

If you're thinking about lowering it, all things considered to do it right you're going to spend $2k minumum, even with maybe 17" wheels (?) And I am under the impression you have a little money to spend (otherwise you wouldn't have asked ??)

IMO -- I would still put that same money into a good solid foundation for him to build his own truck. Everything he puts into it will add value in his eyes, and likely others too.

You could teach him about cars, maybe do an HEI conversion on it, change plugs, general tune up stuff, and get his hands dirty. Like I said earlier, it's one of the things I cherish about my dad the most. He made efforts (and still does) to teach me as we're hanging out together.

If you gave him this truck (and I know, you'd push it off a cliff before it came between yo uand your son.. that's obvious) and I'm sure he'd treasure it too .. I just think the coolness factor of you guys building 'His' truck would never be forgotten.

My dad and I built a 69 Camaro when I was about 13. I kept that car longer than I have ever kept any of them. I am 39, and I have owned 38 cars in my life. I sold the car to buy my first house. It kept me out of PMI, and paid the down payment. I bought it for $2500 bucks too ironically, and sold it for $25,000. That was dad's way to give me knowledge, and interest, a hobby, and a kick in the pants when I got old enough to know better.

My opinion is just that I know, but seriously. I'd leave this black truck just like it is. If I had that truck, I'd sleep in the garage with it at night.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?

next stop: tunnel ram and curb feelers... Hmmm, personally, I'd not lower it, it's just too original and nice as is. Sure, you can UNdo all that work later, but unless I were actually giving it to him, I would not lower it. If giving - then sure, have at it, but if he's just borrowing still until he gets his own. Nope. Just me. Better yet - maybe help him get his own truck.

Hey Rene - is gumby actually bagged or is that a before/after set of pics? Looks perfect in both stances, proving that it's the quality of the truck, not the ride height, that makes a truck cool.

Jocko, Gumby was bagged about 3 years ago by Kevin Hernandez (Kev's Classic's) there's an old thread titled "Gumby's getting layed" around here somewhere.
