Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

24V is smooth with the head:

12V have "ears" that stick up above the runner and are easier to drill and tap than a 24V

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

I've been working away on this thing. I have the front cross member done, welded in the steering box support plates, got the engine painted, and the injection pump now has a 3k gov spring in it. Now the engine is getting new injectors, and a Denny T stage II fuel pin. This thing should run pretty good. I'll try to get more pics later. Hopefully before the weekend I can have the engine sitting back in the frame.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Time for updates! I've been sweating my butt off working away on this thing! I got the front cross member and engine cross member finished and bolted back in. I also installed some heat/sound deadener insulation on the fire wall.

Got the engine painted and the injection pump installed. Also installed the SFI rated flex plate.

Yesterday I sat the engine back in it and hung the transfer case on it to see what mods are next. I'm going to have to cut the cross member and clearance it for the drive shaft. The drive shaft also needs lengthened. I installed the starter, hooked up the fuel feed line, installed the OE oil pressure sensor, and have to get a bushing for the OE water temp sender.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

I finally got the D70 in the rear of this and got the turbo and exhaust manifold back on. I have the down pipe built, now to finish the exhaust and build the trans mount. Been cleaning parts and pieces and painting them, installed the new water pump, and removed the dodge truck harness and PCM. I'm going to use it to run the alt, grid heaters, and over drive on the trans.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Been plugging away at this thing. Anyone that says these don't take much time, must not know. The exhaust tip is just tacked on there to see if I like the angle the pipe is coming out at. It does have 4" going over the tcase too.

Intercooler and support mods.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

I've got to figure out where the trans cooler is going to go now, and get the trans linkage figured out. Still waiting on the radiator and drive shafts, then I need to finish up the wiring. Yee haw!

Cool build! Where did you find the GMC grille without the emblem base molded into it?

I'm not sure where that came from. I saw that and was like sweet! You can see where an emblem would have bolted in there. Could that be an 88 only deal maybe?

Today I spent 4 hours installing this. Wow, I'm glad I don't have to do anymore of these for a while.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Here is some more progress pics. The radiator support is done, I just have to paint it. Been working on replacing the tie rod ends, installing the DIY4X spring plates on the D60, got the fan hub and belt on the engine. Fuel lines are installed and hooked up, and new injectors are installed.

Yes, but not a lot of picture proof. The new trans is in, transfer case is back on, and now I have to redo the trans mount. I swapped out the fan hub so I can get an aftermarket pulley for the a/c bracket I'm running on it. Finally got the radiator back, and need to test fit it now. I had to remove the lh fender because the inner structure of it is all cracked and broken causing the fender to sag and at times you can't open the driver's door. I'll post pics this afternoon.

I'm watching closely, I have a 12 valve, dana 60 / 70 combination and I picked up a 3/4 ton burb.
Just waiting for spring!

Time for pics! I got the tcase on, trans mount done, modified the shock mounts on the D60. I had to remove the driver's fender as it was nearly destroyed. This is the worst nice fender I've ever seen! I'll post what I have uploaded and then do more later.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

More done. Inner fender repainted.

New pulley for A/C set up.

A/C bracket.

Throttle cable set up installed, transmission pressure cable brackets hooked up and I got the cable adjusted properly.

Here was the first shot at making the trans mount. I ended up removing 1 1/2" of height from it to get the transfer case to clear the floor board. This utilizes the stock NP205 tcase rubbers. This truck had poly ones, so it worked out really well.

I have to remove the trans cross member and add gussets to the area where I raised it to clear the drive shaft. Tomorrow I will finish the front axle shock mounts. We had to put the mounting bolts in the mini lathe and turn them down from 3/4" to 1/2" so the chevy shocks can be used.

When I was repairing the LH fender, I realized the radiator support had another broken piece. It was still bolted on the fender. I fixed it and then repainted the entire support.

Did you make the AC bracket? I want one!
Is the frame stock or reinforced?

Great work by the way, I can't wait to get started on mine.

Keith, no I didn't make the A/C bracket. I got the bracket and pulley from Auto World. They make top notch stuff. Check them out. If you call them ask for Donna. Tell her the crazy guy with the Cummins Corvette sent you.
