Re: 67-72 Chev Crewcab Build 2nd Gen
Started another crew cab today, unlike the two before this one I will be stretching a regular pick-up cab instead of cutting down a suburban. I will be using some suburban parts but by an large manufacturing my own.
Strectched a frame yesterday. This frame, though no one has ordered it this way, will be a four door crew cab long bed one ton. I have not decided if it will be a dually or not, that can be determined later on by me or future buyer. I used two longhorn frames to make one. I removed all body mounts and bed mounts and will add cab mounts later.

Do you have to fishplate it or will the cross member hold it together?

Very good approach to making a crewcab. Great skills too. How long have you been doing all the fab work?

Re: 67-72 Chev Crewcab Build 2nd Gen
how much do you get for one of these cabs when they are done,,even though i really want the challenge, money wise, it might just be cheaper in the long run

Nice looking stretch you got going on. I too and out of my comfort zone doing this kind of a build, but enjoy reading all about this build.

Re: 67-72 Chev Crewcab Build 2nd Gen
I thought about building a crew cab myself and decided to go to the bank withdraw $10,000 for all tools and supplies to complete the build and then unload all supplies in the shop go to Driverside door stick my left hand in the door and slam it shut after that go to the passenger side and shut the other hand in the door (this all being for the frustration of the future build) next have the wife come out to the shop square up and kick me right in the family jewels (this being for all the time that will Be spent away from the family during the build)
So to get this straight I have two smashed hands, sore jewels and in the hole $10,000 for all supplies.. To me $15,000 seems very fair to have all the hard work done..and for me to do the finishing touches. Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 67-72 Chev Crewcab Build 2nd Gen
Nicely said, and it is not a job if u are doing what you love and are good at. I'm sure by the time you get your 6th or 7th cab done you will have it down to a science and be able to build one in your sleep. I truely respect someone with your talent and skill. When I was 14 my older brothers were always working on cars and I was out chasing girls and now I have a passion for old cars and trucks but kick myself now for not learning all that I could when I had a chance. I am learning as I go from trial and error and applaud someone to even take on a task as great as this. To me the price is paying for that skill and tools that it cost you to build this piece of art. Keep it up and always post pics.

Re: 67-72 Chev Crewcab Build 2nd Gen
Great work as usual.
I had the same thoughts about splitting a truck cab and going that route but building all the rest of the parts needed would not be realistic for somebody only doing one truck. For you with all the parts you have fabricated from scratch for production of crew cabs I think this route makes the most sense. Trucks are easy to come by and inexpensive. When you build the square door glass conversion pieces to make truck doors work you will not have to source a Suburban for the build at all. Plus if you fabricate a frame rail insert to stretch one frame instead of putting two frames together then the partial VIN's & door tag could all match eliminating some possible issues if any inspections were required.

Well as far as the frame rail goes I will probably always do it the way I am doing it now. Primarly because I like only have one joint instead of two and I think that it would be to hard to keep the frame rigid. And since each frame will be custom built to the specific specifications of each truck ie) long bed short bed and they all need to be at least 3/4 ton frames. I am already making the glass frames however, I think I am aways off from building both b-pillars and doors do to the cost that most people are not willing to pay. I am currently trying to reproduce the suburban floor pan section so I don't have to do so much work removing old parts from old trucks/burbs.
